| Make sure the ground is safe.
Keep it moving.
Call out names way ahead, and draw numbers as well so people know when their turn is coming up. I hate when the announcer only calls names. It's hard to keep up with what number that corresponds to, and if I know my draw is 85, I know that is 10 after draw 75, but not how many that is after Jane Doe.
Make sure the ropes are in good, and if possible have a secondary measure. |

Location: Sunnyland Florida | - Good Ground and two tractors, if possible, to keep it moving along.
- Have plenty of help; call arena, kitchen, etc. crews the night before and have back-ups if they no-show.
- Start on time.
- Added Money from local businesses will run your entry numbers up. Do this a month ahead and advertise every few days on FB.
- Good announcer.
- Call out the numbers, not just rider names. Have the next 5 riders on standby to keep it running fast. Have a time limit to get into the arena and enforce it.
- Keep announcing what's to eat in the kitchen. Have some of the club members make and donate their special dishes that are good sellers.
- Organized exhibition. Keep it moving. A lot of places do the "no stopping or walking" rule. Trot, lope, gallop or run only.
- Borrow a back-up timer in case yours breaks.
- Have a set of rules posted, or use NBHA rules. If there are games (besides barrels/poles), have the patterns posted, since some of them are run different ways.
- Smiling faces taking entries.
Best of Luck!

Location: Lost in the corn of Iowa. | -Make sure sure your stakes are easily seen. Like wrap your ropes in colored duct tape so you can easily find the stakes after each drag.
-Put a 60 sec time limit on exhibitions
That's all I can think of besides what others have posted.

Location: LuluLand~along I64 Indiana | how are you going to do your running order? random draw? are you imputing the info in a computer? how are you doing paybacks. do you have association forms incase anyone wants to join the sanctioned association? Have people who know the regular crowd and who know how to run an entry booth running things. |

Location: Louisiana | Have rules, even if you follow another association's rulebook, and stick to them!! Even if it's something I don't agree with 100%, you'll gain my respect by at least following through and being fair to everyone. Know that somebody is always going to find something to be pissed off about. Follow the rules, and carry on. Keep it moving! Announce who's coming up, what event is next, etc. Have quick transitions between events. I would rather be done early and say, "Whoa, I didn't have time to sit down and eat a burger!" than, "Oh my God, what time is it? How long have I been here?" START ON TIME!! |

| Keep it MOVING! I just HATEHATEHATE sitting and waiting at a show because a) they don't start on time for ANY reason or b) the tractor driver is ridiculous and drags all over unimportant areas or around a barrel 20 times in slow speed or c) the announcer is too busy with (insert your choice of task/social interaction) to realize someone should be running and hasn't been called in yet.
Using JUST this as a focus for your shows, I'll be there. Don't care what the format is. A speed show with 3 events and 60 entries per event should NOT take 8 hours and last into the wee hours of the morning.
If you are doing a closed gate, make sure your gate people are good about getting the gates open/closed in a timely manner. Be sure you have barrel setters who jog to the barrel, no mosey. Be sure you have staff to answer questions during the show and that the announcers booth is OFF LIMITS to anyone that is not staff. Be sure you announce clearly that you will drag 10 minutes before start time and you will start on time. If you are going to do a National Anthem or prayer, do so BEFORE start time, not AT start time.
(can you tell it's a pet peeve of mine?) |

| I recommend doing your payout in all cash.
If you are limiting the amount of warm ups you do stick to it. Even if people BEG you for more warm ups. If you go over one person it is not fair to the others.
Keep things moving. Open your entry booth no later than 30 minutes before warm ups begin. I normally open my entry booth about an hour beforehand.
You will not be able to keep everyone happy. Putting on horse shows is a thankless job. |
