How would you want your colt to be clocking to be ready for the Diamonds and dirt? What would you use as your determining factor in entering?

I don't think I would gauge on a standard pattern because Diamonds and Dirt isn't a standard. a high 15 wins it. I would be gauging how your horse is clocking on the stakes at races like in second exhibitions. They need to be a 1D horse by March pretty much to be a contender at Diamonds and Dirt. So in December I would want them cruising 2D for sure.

Or look at Jolene Montgomerys video she posted of her 3 yr old. Good lord shes got that colt rockin and rollin through the pattern. Id ask myself if my colt is going to be competition to that one haha. Mine personally are not, my going on 4 yr old is still at the ranch working cattle getting super broke lol

Really, the only way to tell is look at the final results at the end of the week and see if you are the winner! lol

No kidding. My three year old won't be going because we found an injury that has her sound now, but will eventually be the end of her career. Not sure what to do now other than sell her as a trail horse or broodmare prospect. Glad I didn't start paying her into anything.

I think you enter, and then if you end up in the money, your colt was ready.  LOL.
Seriously though, a year ago, I had a filly in my barn that was clocking a 3/4 to a full second off a year ago in exhibitions, and I sold her.  New jockey hauled her as much as she could all fall to the futurities and all winter to jackpots (which is hard up here because there's not a lot to go to up here) and ended up making the short go on that mare and placing pretty deep.  You never know until you get there.

I think Rockinas has some great advice.  You never know when that colt is going to step up.  Just be reasonable and if they seem to be progressing, go for it.  But you need to be confident in yourself and your colt.....that confidence will go a long ways for you both!
