Location: In my own world | I live in central MO where its cold in the winter and I don't have big indoor to ride in. I have a small 50 x 50 to do some circles in but it doesn't allow me to get in a good workout. If it snows and is icy I cant ride up and down my drive like I do to build muscle.
So I was thinking of getting a treadmill. It would be great if it did trotting, but even if I could do a walking incline that would be good too
whats everybody got or recommend?.

Location: Southeast, Texas | I would absolutely love to have a aquatred. (They are heated, and you could always blow dry afterwards! Hehe! Honestly the water part doesn't bother ME because I don't live anywhere near icy conditions.) They have lease options, but I honestly couldn't tell you a price. I know to own one is currently out of my budget, but I might consider selling a kidney! I've heard great things about the theraplate as well. It won't get in a "workout" but it's said to be very beneficial to overall health/conditioning. I wish someone close to me wanted to split the bill! [= The regular treadmills (not aquatred) that I've found go up to 6mph. I know there are faster products, but I haven't come across them yet. |

Location: Bandera, TX | I have an incline treadmill. I really like having it due to my work schedule. The horses get exercised and won't get hurt in conditions like your worring about in the winter. I have a horse that's in pretty good shape that can walk 15 min in the heat and 20 min in the cooler temps. At a speed just below the trot. We use it with: broodmares, yearlings and our riding horses. I've used every piece of equipment except the pool eurociser and can say that I really like the workout the incline does for my horses. The mares go 5-8 min. The babies 2-5 min. and that's a good workout to keep them marginally fit. The speed is easily adjusted to get them their needed workout. I swam my horse during June to prep for the 4th (I had no time to ride him nor even have time to put him on the incline. I only noticed slight changes to the body from the swims.) What he did get from the swim was a sore neck and back. Chiro helped him out of that. I have a three year old that's getting very strong and you have to be careful on the youngsters if they want to play they can get down and dirty due to their strength. I have the Good Horsekeeping SAFE-T-Mill. I'll try to find a picture... |

Location: In my own world | Thanks guys for the reply!! I've been kicking around the idea. I'm reluctant to do lots of circles in my little indoor because it's hard on their joints. Yeah I can walk and flex some and a few circles. There is a big indoor 20 mins from me that I'm going to haul to every other day. My husband asked if I wanted to do an add on and have a big indoor but if there is one up the road I kind of thought maybe I would spend my money on a treadmill or an aquatred instead. I have a futurity horse this year and want to keep her in shape. I have another horse that has stifle issues and needs lots of conditioning. Thanks so much!! And yes I has considered a theraplate too. I didn't know how much conditioning it did? It will get dark early here in the winter and some days it will be too yucky to drive. And sometimes it's 10 degrees and cold and well I don't really want to ride in that. Even if it wasn't snowy that's just cold!!! I'm good to about 30 degrees!! |

I had an aquatred at the facility I managed in Bonner Springs and the horses would ALWAYS crap in it and it was sort of a pain to clean. Neat idea but we hardly ever used it. We hung them on the walker mostly. |
