We built a wood fence last fall and would like to make it dark brown/black.  Would stain or paint work best?   Any brand suggestions as to what may last longest?

We stained ours using diesel fuel. It soaks into the wood and lasts forever. We did it about 15yrs ago when fuel was cheap though lol.

Interesting - how dark did it turn out?

Really really dark to begin with but it will lighten some as it dries. I'll try to take a pic and post it.

We bought ours pre-soaked in creosote for the new fence we put up this spring. Sure beats painting. We stained the other existing fence to match. Lasts longer than paint.

It will stop them for a while but eventually the taste will be gone. I'm not sure just regular boards you would get from a hardware store.

We have wooden fence and I painted it - not at all thrilled with it.  Neighbors down the road have wooden fence and put used motor oil on theirs and it looks fantastic and has been up for years.  Really kicking myself.

As someone who spent many of my childhood summers painting and repainting fence....I would not paint it unless you want to do the same!
