Location: MN | Long story short. We have this yearling filly at our place now and it is going to have to get mixed into a herd of 4 mares. Two of the mare ( one is the top and the other is at the bottom) have no problem with the filly. The middle two (are full sisters) want to tear her apart, lunging at the fence that dividers them and will grab her if they can. The one horse bit my hubby really bad in the chest trying to get to this filly. How long is it going to take to get these aggressive mares to calm down? Scared to death if we turn the filly out even with one of these mares, that the filly we get ripped to pieces.
I know that there is usually some running and kicking but I don't know about how bad this could get. Right now the 2 aggressive mares are on small concrete lot and the filly is turned out on a a 2 acre pasture with the other 2 mares. I only do this for a 1/2 day, then the filly goes back on the small concrete pen and the others mares are back together.
The filly has been at our place for 6 days.
We haven't changed our herd for 11 years so the 4 mares are use to each other.
Any ideas? |

Location: SE KS | Don't really have any advice, this is always a tricky situation!!! Try dividing the 2 hateful mares up, & getting one of them "friendly" with the filly.

Location: Nashvegas | My only advice is to make her the "owner" of the pasture area or if she is good with the two nice mares they all become the owners. I would do that for a day or two to change the dyanamic a bit. The other mean mares would them be turned in with the filly and the two friendly mares. I hope I am makeing sense. It should make the transition a bit easier on all parites. Good Luck! |

Location: Washington. (The DRY side.) | Well to be honest, if those 2 mares are just bitches, they might NEVER be any better. Some are just like that. Generally they will get over it after a couple of days or weeks. Problem is, if they are that aggressive, they can cause SERIOUS injury, (Or worse.) especially in a smaller pasture. If I HAD to put the filly with them, I would add one nasty mare at a time! NOT both at the same time. |

Location: MN | I know that we can only add one horse at a time. Just wish that they were hobble trained, that way they couldn't due much until they got over it. We thought that by having the pens with two common fence lines that it would help. |

Location: MN | We tried one of mean mares today, she tried to run the filly down but the mean mare is not in shape and couldn't catch her. After letting them be in pasture for hour with no improvement we put the filly back in her pen. The filly was one happy camper to be back in pen.
Any more ideas? I know the other mean mare will be faster and meaner so she will not be tried yet.
