Location: North Dakota | So not only did Cash hurt his leg (I found the swelling btw, it is definitely not a stone bruise). So I went out tonight to hose his leg and re-wrap it. When I put his halter on I felt something wet. So I looked under his chin and I found this huge, puss-y, bloody mess. It wasn't there yesterday. I cleaned it up some and put vetricyn all over it, but I've never delt with such a nasty wound in such an odd place...so I'm not sure what else I can do. I'll probably be paying the vet a visit soon anyway, since his leg isn't much better.

Location: CA | Looks like strangles. It can also result in a condition called Purpura Haemorrhagica which can cause painful swelling in the legs. |

Location: CA | Don't worry. Let it run its course. Unless he goes off feed or becomes extremely lethargic, he will be fine and shouldn't need any veterinary care. Keep him isolated and monitor his food and water intake. If the abcess has already broke, he should be approaching the tail end of the illness. My two year old and six year old have it right now. Both were a little lethargic for day or two and had large swellings under their jaws. After the abscesses broke they felt much better. The good news is it can be a pain in the butt, but once they get through it they usually build up an immunity and you won't have to worry about your horse getting it next time you're stalled next to 300+ other horses at your next big barrel race!!!

Ok. Yeah this is completely new territory for me. I never noticed anything because he's so calm and easy going anyway, and he's definitely been drinking and eating fine.ETA: If his swollen leg is related to this, will it clear up on its own as well? It was only 3 days ago I discovered his leg so I think it could well be related.

| BE very careful when cleaning it, Its very contagious. I bought wet wipes cleaning cloths and kept a plastic bag to put them in after use. Also a bucket of diluted bleach water for My hands. They will heal its just yucky !!! |

Location: Adopt a homeless pet - www.petfinder.com! | I had a horse get stranges and purpura. It was a tough one to deal with. Is the swelling in your horse's leg more of an overall "filling" of the limb, or isolated spot? And is it in more than one leg? Purpura is the horse's immune system going haywire as the result of an infection (strangles, respiratory). My horse was on dex, then prednisone for a while to calm it down. Location: North Dakota | The swelling was in the whole lower half of his front leg. Cold hosing and wrapping have helped that a lot. The other day he had a 104 degree temperature! My vet's helped out a lot and his spirits are up, his leg doesn't seem as sore and isn't swollen anymore, his abcsess is draining nicely, and his temp is back to normal. I think he's on the mend! |
