I broke my pelvis in 3 places on Thursday, and fortunately it does not require surgery. Does anyone here have any experience with this type of injury? How long until you were back riding? The weather here is so perfect and it's driving me insane being cooped up and unable to do anything fun outside!

Must be painful! I have only dealt with a horse that did.

Horse kicked me and I had fractured pelvis. Couldn't walk with out help and my truck wasn't an automatic so I couldn't drive. It was a long time ago so I can't remember how long before I could ride. I think I missed 2 weeks of work. Sorry I'm not much help.

A couple of different times. It's horrible! Sitting, standing, sleeping, riding, etc is tricky. Just go slow and get plenty of rest. Eat good meals and take supplements to keep your body in materials to rebuild with.

I was a good 6 weeks before I even felt like riding for the fracture, then a couple for the cracked pelvis, and that was really pushing it. I wasn't doing anything fast. Take it easy!

Yup!  Pick me! I fractured mine years ago, and it was prob one of the worst pains I have ever had.
It took a good 90 days for me to be able to ride...

after you heal , do exercises to increase strength in that area.
Mine was broken on that piece that joins in the front. At times when I land wrong or get a jarring in that area from riding, OUCH!  And this has been over 30 years since the injury

I wasn't allowed to walk without crutches for 12 weeks and it took me a good month after that before I could ride halfway comfortably...even by then it would still hurt if my horse moved wrong.  My break was in the hip joint.  I broke mine in September and didn't make a barrel run until February.

I had never learned the knack of sitting still before that, but pain is a good motivator.  I slept on the couch for a few weeks because it was easier to get up and down than the bed.  I also had to have help getting on and off the toilet for a couple of weeks because I had to use my arms to get up and down and there was nothing to grab onto.  That was not a fun injury at all.

I think i'm having sympathy pains for you because my back is sore this morning.  I know, I shouldn't complain because I know you're in an enormous amount of pain.  I wish we were closer....i'd come over and torture  you with old NFR videos and scary movies like my friend did for me when I was down for all summer several years ago with my crushed leg.  If there's anything you need, please let me know!  I miss you, my friend!!!!!!

Broke my upper and lower pelvis when i come off a horse at full speed. It was worse than having a baby all natural without any pain meds.....i wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy....I did that in Jan. one year and started back riding in March to get ready for doing a flag routine in a rodeo the first weekend in April that year & i didn't ask the Dr.'s permission....i'm sure i wouldn't have gotten it. I do remember my elderly Dad could out walk me for awhile, then i had to learn how to run on my own feet all over again...my daughters thought that was hilarious.

A horse fell on me and broke my pelvis when I was 9. It was terrible pain. I was in a wheelchair for a month or so then on crutches for a while then back to riding in about 4 months but I was young and enthusiastic and healed fast. It would take me forever to heal nowdays probably. I am 32 now and still have a little bit of pain when I make sudden movements side to side involving my hips and I can not run without pain. Hope you heal up fast and get back to riding!

Thanks for the info everyone! I feel like the worst part (and it's actually a great thing) is that I'm not in real bad pain lately. I'm a little achy but have found how to move and not hurt, so I feel like I should be out doing things. And I want to be out doing things. The first day before I found out it was broken, it was terrible and so was the next day. I will go see the ortho this week and find out what I'm really supposed to be doing and how long he wants me out. I guess reality hasn't really set in that I'm sidelined for a while :(
And Jessi... I wish you were here to watch old NFRs with me! Scary movies... Probably not, you'd have to spend the night lol. I stayed up to watch the Omaha rodeo last night and it made me want to go ride lol! Tv is such garbage these days that I made Taylor take me to barns and noble and got a Bill Dorrance book for some good reading!

OK, fine, no scary movies, but I will bring all of the old horse movies I can find and we can be like two little girls weeping and crying over National Velvet, Casey's Charm, The Black Stallion and all the other great ones.  :

I'm anxious to hear what the ortho says when you go this week.  Until then, don't be getting out and around too much until you know what we're working with here.  Sometimes the pain subsides enough that we think we can do things when we still shouldn't be.  If I need to come and bring my ACE I will give you a dose!!!!  LOL  Don't make me do it!

Lol I was just getting all weepy over secretariat! But I think you may have to come ACE me... I can't picture myself feeling this good and not getting to do anything for another 12 weeks. I guess what your saying is I can't go and just watch the barrel race tonight? I think it's good for my soul..

Ouch!  Hope you heal quickly.  Don't do too much or it will take longer to heal.  How'd you break it?

I was riding a 2 old and he just started bucking out of nowhere like babies will do. I had him covered for 4 or 5 jumps but then he went right and I went left. I just landed like a sack of potatoes on my right hip.

Oh shoot that's a tough landing.  I just don't do colts anymore.  I make sure they are WELL ridden before I step foot on one.  Doesn't always work but it slims the chances down.
