| We have a horse that evidently has some kind of soft tissue injury. This started with a hot nail in July. He has not gone sound, but is now walking soundly, but still limps at a trot. The vets did block the foot and he went 95% sound. They recommended a MRI to see what the exact problem is.....$$$$$ or continue what I have been doing, since he is showing improvement. His x-rays show no bone issues. So, I am just wondering if cost for an MRI varies much from state to state, We were given a price of $2200 for the one foot, which included being at the vet clinic for 3 days. Then treatment depending on the problem..., and then more stall rest, which is what we have been doing. |

Location: Central Texas | My horse had some sinus/dental issues which required a MRI of the head. Cost me 500.00 but then I am lucky enough to be close to Texas A & M and it was done through the school/training division. I believe in most places it can be much more costly. You might want to check around and see if there is a college/university that will provide that option. It was worth the 2 hour drive for me. Good luck. |

Location: The Oklahoma plains. | I think it varies, where are you located? I will say it is cheaper to do the feet as a pair and I highly recommend that you do both while you have your horse under. And I will say, it is worth EVERY PENNY IMO. I have spent years and several hundred dollars wasted away only to have an issue not seen on Xray and that could not be fixed no matter the amount of time off.
I highly recommend Animal Imaging in the Dallas Tx area. They see 10 times more MRI's than most and therefore I feel they are more likely to see a subtlety than others as well. I think it was $1500 for both feet and most insurance will cover the procedure. |

| Are you in TN? I may be having to get an MRI on a front hoof of my horse and I'm in west Tennessee. I'm guess you maybe as well, so I'll be interested to know what everybody says on this. |

I don't recommend UT....Go to Rood and Riddle...sounds pricey but its not and when you leave there you know for sure. You can ask for more than one vet's opinion on the MRI while you are there. |

Thanks for recommendations! I was worried I would have to rob 2 or 3 banks to afford them, but I guess I'll call and see if I can get a ball park figure. |

Location: Central Montana | The closest one to me is CSU - I was quoted $2,000 -$2,500 for my reiner with holes in his navicular bones. Ummm........No, I cannot afford that..........especially knowing that there is a very good possibility that having it done isn't going to change the treatment plan ...... I could just be out that much more. |

Location: nj | Had a friend just call around for prices at the 2 places in NJ who do it - $3200 for 1 foot (were they put them out) an $2800 for a 'standing' mri. They were trying to figure out where else to price it out at cause it seemed way higher then other parts of the country.

Thing is UT reads one once in a blue moon. Rood and Riddle they read them all the time. Go with the experience even if your paying more money. I lived and learned this lesson. |

Exactly!!
And to the person with holes in the navicular- you may very well have soft tissue primary or secondary to that issue and there may be NO treatment. So it is worth it to know vs having hope and wasting more time and money. But holes in the navicular do not sound promising at all and I may lean towards retirement for sure. |

Location: Central Texas | Just chiming in here. My gelding had what I would describe as "holes" in his navicular bone. Of course the vet has a much better term but I can't remember what. They showed up as dark spots on the xrays. No soft tissue issues though. Tildren treatments gave my gelding his career and quite possibly his life back (he came up very sore and very lame). That being same, if you can, get it all checked out (xrays and mri) but it doesn't necessarily mean retirement, possible yes. |

Location: Texas | Had one done in Louisiana about four years ago, it was around $700/one foot. They were running a special to try to get the word out that they had the machine. They sent the results off to an MRI specialist to read.
I have learned since then that there are different "powers" of MRI machines. My vet compared them to a polaroid camera vs. a top of the line digital camera. You might want to find out the power or rating of where ever you choose to go. |
