Here is a pic of it out of my hay. Two little dried flower heads and then the pods.

Thank you! I'll keep my eyes open for it in my bales! I don't think I have any, but want to confirm!

Hoary Alyssum is a nasty weed for horses. It doesn't seem to affect cattle or goats at all. Get rid of it quick or it will take over. If you pull it after the little seed pods along the sides of the plant have developed, make sure you bag it and take it to the landfill to be destroyed. The plants can distribute thousands of seeds that can stay viable for up to nine years. If you pull the plants, make sure you try to get the roots and the little rosettes too, it is easiest to pick when the ground is wet, and it's a good idea to spread a little more favorable grass seed to out compete the new growth of HA. If you choose to use herbicide, 24-d and dicamba work well, but talk to your local invasive plant coordinator for guidance. Hoary Alyssum doesn't seem to like to grow in well seeded and irrigated areas.

Thank you. The area this is growing at is a neighbors ditch so we will talk to her about it. It seemed to be mostly in a small area (for now). At least now we know what to watch for when baling!! Is it toxic at all stages of growth or just when it is flowered and with pods?

It is toxic at all stages. They usually won't choose to eat it in the pasture as long as there are better alternatives, but they can't distinguish it in the hay. It is definately a good idea to walk the hayfields of people you are buying from or at least trust that they know what this plant is and that they have kept their fields clean.

We bale our own so we will remain on the lookout that is for sure.  Luckily there were only a few bales that came from this area that has the weed in it.

We had it show up in our valley a few years ago and it is everywhere now. We ended up with some hay that had it in it and didn't know. I fed horses at night and the next morning I had several who could barely walk we got them new hay and they were fine . It scared me because at the time we didn't know anything about the weed and wasn't sure what had caused the sudden acute lameness. We keep an eye out for it on the place now.
