| I know this is an old post but, I have some questions and concerns! At home I will grain my horse in barn and his hay is across the pasture! He will run from barn to pasture and cough!(dusty conditions) when we have a race after his run he will cough also! Almost like clearing himself! He's never bled and is in good shape! Would you chalk it up to dust and allergies or maybe more?! Thanks |

Location: lone star state | Possibly allergies. Try dexamethazone on his grain and c if it helps. Cheap easy way to treat allergies. No harm done if not allergies and you can rule out and try something else. |

I was just starting him on the barrels so I couldnt tell by performance as he was still green on the pattern
I noticed that once we were running more - he was getting more and more anxious at the gate - he would run hard but would shut down going to the third barrel - I thought again it was because he was green - no coughing - no other signs
One day I went to make a practice run at local arena - came home and put him in his stall and feed him (about 30 minute drive from arena back to my house - so 1-1.5 hr after I made my practice run) - he drop his head to eat and bled
I gave him a few days off thinking maybe it was the heat/dust
Ran him again at a practice run in 2 weeks and took him to eat grass once I unsaddled and bled again
Turned him out 3 months as I had 2 other horses I needed to finish and pulled him back up
Worked hard with my vet to figure out what would work best for him and still make him fire hard - I have had to play with lasix timing/dosage and had to add dex as well as he will bleed thru straight lasix

Could be dust/allergies, but how do you know he's not bleeding? Have you had him scoped? Just because one doesn't bleed out through the nostrils doesn't mean he/she isn't bleeding. |

Location: Middle Tennessee | I have recently started running my horse on Lasix due to being a bleeder. I have a couple of questions.
How long after starting Lasix did your horses begin clocking good again? My guy has went from 1D to 3D/not even placing.
Is Lasix safe to use frequently? I rodeo pretty hard, typically two a weekend, and sometimes a barrel race during the week. I am also planning to go out west on a rodeo trip. It makes me nervous to give Lasix this frequently. So, how often can I give it, safely? |

Location: NC | I have to say thank you so much for this thread!!! My mare yesterday at a barrel race who has never bled and i never thought she was, had a small amount of blood coming from her nose. It was extremely dusty in the warm up pen and was a double header after running fri night. I texted my vet and she said it sounds like she may be one. So i picked up a container of bleeder stop by OXYgen. I really wouldnt have recognized the other symptoms like coughing after a lesson and being wide on 2nd/3rd if it wasnt for the info!! |

| No, I have not had him scoped yet! I realize it may be allergies more than bleeding, only because of the short runs from barn and then cough and in pasture running around and will cough . Between dusty conditions and dry hay it can be the combo of the two. |

Location: Down the Gravel Road near the Missouri River, SD | Thanks for the post ladies..it helps alot to hear other stories and try to figure out whats going on with our horses. I have a horse that I just recently started to get serious and start hauling away from home, and at first I thought he was nervous and holding his breath during the run and then he takes 2-3 deep gulps of air after the run. I watch to make sure he's not breathing heavy like an out of shape horse but I notice this and how loud (not a roarer sound but he's close) he is when we gallop during the week to keep him legged up. We already have one big horse that I know is a bleeder but his signs were different from this guy. No way would I have thought mine might be one too but now Im going to treat and see.

Location: Somewhere between raising hell and Amazing Grace | He may not be a bleeder, he could be displacing. Having him scoped would be my first suggestion for sure! Definitely let us know how it goes!
I am one of the lucky ones. My horse has so far had his most successful year in 2014 with no lasix. He's just been on THE Pulmoneze, EQ Royal, and honey. Every run but three were 1D. He is the reserve 1D champion for the year in our NBHA District. And the three runs he was 2D he got checks.
I know not everybody is that lucky with their bleeders. I know many people still dislike lasix. But I think there's always a time and place for lasix.
I have also talked to a lot of vets this year randomly and many of them feel that 2013/2014 have been the two worst years in a long time for horses bleeding, and they all said the same thing, that it could be allergy related. |

Would come out and cough a few times after her run. Never had her scoped but ended up trying lasix out and it did the trick. I give 6ccs in the muscle & ventipulmon. I keep her out of dusty warm-up areas. I ride in fields when I exercise at home. I only do about 10min of exercising during the week, every other day. This workout plan has greatly helped! I have tried T.H.E. product for bleeders and did not notice a difference, otherwise I have not tried any other supplements. ETA: Anyone tried a nebulizer for horses? You only do 10 minutes of exercising every other day?  When my gray horse was coming back from bleeding, doc told me that the NUMBER ONE thing would be to get him in amazing shape before running again, and since then I have made every attempt to have all my horses in tip-top condition before I enter them. 10 minutes every other day is bad news for a bleeder. Probably why you didn't see a difference with THE. Supplements are not the cure all. They help in addition to proper nutrition and training.  to what missroselee and rodeowithjoker is saying.

My vet said it was better to run her on the lasix then let her struggle with internal bleeding and she never refused the gate because of this issuse.

I totally agree with this… I have a bleeder that is in GREAT PHYSICAL CONDITION, but he has to have Lasix when he runs. Every time.

| I have a 3yo that I'm not really riding.. She has coughed occasionally since shortly after I got her I think. Thought it was allergies as she is also itchy. Noticed her coughing a little more and just had her scoped. She has an entrapped epiglotis and is having surgery next week. |

This is a true statement. A trainer heard my horse cough and said he was a bleeder. Had him scoped, he was clean but had a build up of mucus. Did allergy testing and he is now on allergy meds and SmartBreath pellets. He coughs 2 or three times while warming up and find afterwards. |
