Also, what was going on at the second barrel? It seemed like quite a few horses were having a hard time going to it. I saw at least three horses skitter to the wrong side of it.

That 2nd took a beating!  I was watching from right behind it and some of the girls approaches were a little off and some were just trying to turn it tight.  The majority of the horses were HUGE and they were running as hard as they could so very little or no time to correct or adjust.  I saw some amazing moves to save barrels too, incredible riding.

There were some SERIOUS moves made. I know I saw one gal set back up all three barrels. It just seemed like the second was giving people an especially hard time. It was one hell of a barrel race, that's for sure. I'm thinking I'd like to drag my butt to TX next year to watch a qualifier!

BHW_SECRET_SANTA - 2014-11-02 5:45 PM Who ran the palomino in the halter/lead and why? Is that her normal set up or had something gone wrong with her bridle at the last minute?
That was Natalie Foutch, but I don't know her personally or why she ran in a halter/lead.

If it was a giant palomino that ran to the left, that's Orville and he might be the ratiest horse on the planet. Every time I've seen her run him, she's had him in a pretty light hackamore. When they make a clean run, look out. I want to say they ended up 18th in the world last year. He is amazing to watch.

Two of the top 10 or a 9 year old and a 10 year old.  Obviously the parents have them mounted but these little girls can ride.  They both were hustling, giving cues, turing and looking to the next barrel- definitley not just along for the ride.  During the 5D I ran after one of them, her horse was a handful in the alley- not refusing but excited, hopping around, spinning, etc. she had no problem geting him straight and going foward, did not need her parents to lead her in.  It was a blast watching them run.

I bet we were sitting right by you.... I was down about 10 feet from the 2nd.
IT WAS amazing.. I would buy a dvd of the entire race.  It doesn't matter what kind of barrels they use in Glen Rose, there's always quite a few down... I've smashed my fair amount.
You've got to nail your approach from the alley and it can be a little bit tricky.  You're going straight into kinda tall white walls and horses get ratey.  Ground is a tick on the deeper side.
All that said, it's my favorite pen to run in, I love it there.
Lauren - keep your chin up!  You did great and ought to give it another go in Jan.  I've never seen so many tough runs at any barrel race....ever!

I think a lot had second barrel issues due to bad 1st barrel. I saw so many come in running pulling on their outside rein as soon as they left the alley! Some recovered but most did not.
