Pros? Cons? Are they more cost effective than a stick built building? We live in IL where we can get howling winds and downright COLD winters, can they withstand that?

Going to be needing a barn next year and looking into my options. Any and all input on them is welcome! Thanks!

My dad went with me to look at one and told me to look for these few things:
Warps in the lumber (found a lot that were)
Certified stamps on the end of the lumber (Support beams were the rest was not)
Saftey stamps on the lumber (None were stamped)
And make sure the lumber is treated (After searching through piles of paper the dealer said It was!)

Because I couldn't find a Mod that didn't use any of the cheaper non certified lumber I'll be building my own. Without the certified lumber you can get boards that are warped, thinner, and weaker. I don't want a weak barn for winds... My insurance company also wouldn't insure my horses if they were under the structure and got hurt!! That was the final nail in the coffin for that idea for me...
 Hope that helps.

ETA: My dad has had his own lumber business for over 30 years. He has many all around the world. So I trust him when he says look for the things listed above about the lumber.

When you say Modular horse barn I think of the MD and BarnMaster style barns. Is this what you are meaning?

Yeah, the kind that are delivered in a couple pieces and are then put together!

Okay...We have a BarnMaster here in Texas and I would never build another no matter where we lived. The frame has rusted out all along the bottom and we are pretty dry here and I clean our stalls 3 times a day. It rusted bad where our water buckets are. I would rather have to replace boards. They rattle like crazy when it's windy.

We had our cement and piers poured according to their specs. If we knew then what we know now...we would have had the bottom panels sitting up much higher so the shavings couldn't get up next to the panels.

Oh yikes! I'm glad I asked. :/. Yes, it's pretty dry in Texas and if you're having issues with the metal rusting  I can only imagine how fast they'd rust here in IL.

It wasn't covered by warranty?

Another question - is it possible to comparison shop prices without calling for a sales pitch?

The warranty is for kick through, not rusting through. Now Barn Master has been bought out by MD barns and that problem is supposedly been taken care of but there is no way I would chance it. I've seen many with the same problem only worse as I always pull the shavings away from the wall.
All you can do is call MD and ask about warranty against the bottom rails rusting out and demand it in writing.
