It's that time of year for us.  I'm just looking for opinions on equine insurance prices, reputations and payment plans.  Our current company has allowed us to make payments, but I've let it laps.  So I'm not sure they will allow it again.
We have had mortality and major medical.  So I'm looking at something that offers that and we have never had a claim.
Looking for recommendations.

I go through Albracht Insurance and have been happy with them. I am not sure on payments, as I just pay the premium upfront. I am almost certain my rate is 3.5% of the value for mortality plus colic surgery. I have never looked into major medical, so not sure what that would be.

Yup, I really like how easy they are to deal with.

Right now I have Markel but I might be looking for a new carrier. They have changed their policy from $375 down for major medical/surgery to $325 down PLUS 20% of the overall cost up to $5k. Right now I have my horse insured for $4200 and if I want to bring it up to $5k they will cover him for surgery and medical, but as it is, unless I opt (and show) that the value of the horse (and cost of premium) has gone up, he will lose major medical as of 12/16/14.

Yes 3.5% is what they quoted me awhile back. I need to send in the paperwork, this will be my first time to insure a horse. I think the peace of mind will be worth it!

Any that allow monthly payments instead of so much up front?

I recently switched mine also. Now I have Plains Horizon. The prices were slightly cheaper and they were a lot easier to work with. I have mortality and major medical. 3.3% for my barrel horses and 3% for my weanlings, yearlings etc.

I went with Wilkins. They were very responsive to my emails, quick to reply, and they allowed me to make payments. I think my rate on my broodmare is 2.x%..... but don't quote me.....

I have Markel and have been very happy.  Had a horse with a DDFT injury not even a month after I insured him.  They covered it, and paid 100% of the stem cell procedure.  Even after all of that, my premium this year is actually a little bit lower.
