I've started a few 2yr olds before and my new little guy is coming along nicely. I'm going to start line driving him today. But I'm curious. Who else does this? I've never started one without it. How else do you guys get one going? I follow Clinton Andersons method for gaining respect and ground manners. (All though I've known about the "method" before he made it public and popular)

So can you guys share how you go about starting yours?

We drive all ours that we break ourselves. Lots of time and gives you an edge before jumping on.

Yeah I line drive mine 99% of the time ... gives you an edge and re-enforces a few things like following their nose and giving to pressure.

I used to drive with long lines but the last few that I've started I haven't. Instead I've been driving them forward on the lounge line -- kind of like driving but with only 1 line. Then to teach them to follow their face and change directions, I flex them side to side but I reach over their back and hold them instead of standing on the same side. Then I'll also run the rope around their butt and have them step out of it. So far for the Colts I've broke its accomplished the same thing as driving. They know how to drive forward, change directions and follow their face,ad they're used to a rope around their butt and legs.

my favorite colt starter drives all the colts before riding. They will know side pass, all leads, have the beginning of a slide, rollbacks and mine did awesome flying lead changes. I love to watch her

I drive all of them Even some of the older problem ones get to ride. All rope horses get driven. You can put them in a situation where they get tangled up in lines and have to deal wth it with out getting hurt.Hobbles same.Save your life and your horses.Older ones with problems go back and drive them, some drive off of a horse.
Colts need to be driven and used to hobbles.Good ground is a must.

This reminds me of my dad.  He was the youngest and smallest of 4 brothers and was the one that always started the horses.  He would line drive all of the colts (I am talking 50 years ago) when I was a girl and I loved to watch him do it.  Wish I had paid closer attention.

First few I ever started never got drove. After learning how to do it, I will never go without it. It teaches them so much more without having to punch them around once you get on because they are lost.
