For myself? I will never buy a "prospest" for that much. A proven horse is one thing, but a prospect is a prospect.
However, I know there are plenty of people willing to pay that for a young one. As it comes with selling horses, it's not so much if the horse is worth it, but if there is someone willing to pay the price.
Yes!! Ha I like starting my horses...I'm good with the 800-2000 price range :) |

| I just bought a $485.00 prospect and she is really nice. Big money prospects are a huge gamble. Ask the TB guys that pay Millions for yearlings and they never out run a turtle...

Location: Oklahoma | Read closely...no one is going to give $20k+ for a colt by just any average son of Dash Ta Fame or Frenchmans Guy. There is a son of both sires in every county the United States, many of which should have been gelded as weanlings. That being said, there is A LOT of nice sons of both as well as sons of Firewater Flit that do have valuable colts that command big price tags. Just because you have a colt BY A SON OF one of the "high end" stallions- that doesn't mean the baby is going to bring $20k as a yearling. There are many sons and daughters of Dash Ta Fame, Frenchmans Guy, Firewater Flit and several other stallions that bring good money. There is a lot that plays into the price of young horses. What has that stallion produced? What kind of mare and what has she won? Buying nice prospects from reputable breeders helps. People are all going crazy because of the A Streak Of Fling baby that brought $114,000 at OKC last week. Yes, ASOF is a very nice horse but that baby was out of one of the greatest broodmares in BARREL RACING HISTORY!! THAT is why that colt brought $114,000...not because he was an ASOF. There will always be a demand for the own sons/daughters but there are also some really nice younger stallions that are going to have an impact as well...Firewaterontherocks, Famous Bugs, Tres Seis...the list goes on.

Or are exceptionally well looking individuals that are out of a name brand sire that got into the right hands, will demo well, and do well on a vet check.
I wouldn't consider Dash for Perks or Sail on Bunny demanding prices to be ones to breed to if I was wanting to ensure a large price tag for a young horse. Some will flame for that but its the truth. I just can't think of any of their weanlings-2yrs bringing those prices. Dash for Perks might on the 2 yr olds.
That ASF went that high at the sale because everything that mare has put on the ground has been a winner.
He wouldn't have brought anywhere near that if he wasn't out of thw mare..

But all of a sudden everyone who has a ASF upped the price. Sorry kiddos but just because you got one doesn't mean he's worth a mint now. I think barrel people are just learning the meaning of a "blue hen mare." I mean you can look at sale catalogues of barrel sales from just 5 years ago compared to now and we are getting so much better at recording earnings in the barrel pen and producers, when it used to just be track stats or nothing. Its exciting that we are finally getting to this point! |

I wouldn't spend that much money on a horse (especially a colt) even if I was given the money to do so.
I don't think I could either, I'm getting to a point where I'd rather put the money in the bank and use it for those in need.

I barrel horse people don't retire their horses unless they get hurt or they are old then, They are to old to breed I think that's a huge reason more broodmares are race earners only. Some can afford to pull embryos but most can't..

Of course the racehorse industry did 30 years ago but the barrel racers are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Great mares like Pie Sky Promises are the reason those babies command big prices. That mare has had three babies by three different sires win $150k, $145k and one that won $100k. Not to mention several that have won $50k or more. She has had big time race horses and produced numerous greats in barrel racing. THAT is why the colt at OKC brought $114,000...his mother is an industry GREAT. Dash Ta Vanila, Mulberry Canyon Moon, Famous Silk Panties...people buy their babies for good money because they were great ones themselves. |
