| how far along would you expect a horse that was broke enough to walk, trot and lope and trail ride anywhere, in 90days. She was pretty green broke i,would say what you would expect at 20 rides on a 2 year old. I would say she should be solid on the pattern, i,wasnot expecting speed but a solid pattern at a good fast lope, ready to take to a show and exhibition, solid pattern. |

| Not sure I understand... This horse is JUST 2? and greenbroke when you sent it off for barrel training? NOT judging Just want know what the question is before I respond... 90 days with a young horse that has already been well started. I feel should know the pattern and possibly be ready to exhibition. My guess is that you are going for the barrel derbys? |

Location: Deep South | I'm sure some trainer's move along faster, but I like to ride one for 60-90 days putting a super solid foundation on it before I even show it a barrel pattern.
Once I have that foundation established I can start the pattern on them and can typically have one loping through pretty solid, ready to exhibition, in about 30-45 days.

Location: At the race track with Ah Dee Ohs | If I am reading you right, 20 rides on a 2 yr old isn't enough for them to be fast loping a solid pattern. IMO they need alot more than 20 rides. |

| Sent a green broke 4 year old. Would walk, trot, canter. Stop, back up. Trail ride. Sent her off for 90 days for some to pattern, how far should she be. She was a quiet mare. |

| It doesn't matter if she is 2!! Kassie Mowry has her Epic Leader two year old loping the pattern. These two year olds are about to be 3 year olds in about a month and some change and if they are decent they need to be able to lope a pattern handedly if you want them ready for OKC next December. Now there are VERY few horses who are about to be 3 who fall into this category.
To answer your question if really depends on who put the foundation on her first and what trainer she went to because my definition of broke is way different than some other people's definition of broke. And 70% of barrel racers can not ride a broke horse. I have a hard time with one straight out of reining training myself...too many buttons and I forget myself. I like them better off the track and we work on slowly adding buttons.

| Depends. Am I reading it right? The horse has 90 days, but only 20 rides?. That would be some fairly inconsistent riding. If she was already green broke, after 20 rides I would expect her to be able to flex, move away from pressure and be more consistent in her transitions. She should be patterned, but I wouldn't be expecting her to be much above loping to and trotting around the barrels. My daughter just put 30 days on one. She is slow loping a very pretty, consistent pattern. But the time she spent was consecutive days. 20 rides out of 90 days is too inconsisant. Expecting the horse to be high loping is not reality.

Location: Somewhere around here | In 90 days the horse should walk in a straight line on a loose rein (trotting too), walk in a almost perfect circle (trotting too), lope in good small/medium/large circles on light contact and have a sense of collection all all of the gaits. Should be able to perform a rollback at a trot or slow lope, a spin to both directions but doesn't have to be fast. And should be able to perform all of this on a snaffle bit or a snaffle with a french link.
Now this is what I'm thinking from day 1 of their first round pen ride then 90. I would maybe piddle around on the barrels just for fun but nothing serious. |

Just trying to clarify.
You sent a horse off for 90 days on the pattern. Prior to going the horse had 20 rides?
I've been confused on the wording too. If she had 20 rides prior to going to a trainer for 90 days, then she should be loping a nice set of barrels and exhibitioning. |

I agree! but I only hold them off 1 year. After 90 days they should have the basics down, transitions, circles, moving off pressure, side passing, counter arc(maybe not the most graceful at it but are beginning to understand it), traveling in straight lines at walk, trot lope, picking up leads correctly. Then after those 90 days we start seasoning to everyday life. reinforcing and building on the firs 90 days but asking them to work. exposing them to as much as possible. |

The horse:
-Is FOUR years old
-Before leaving for the trainer, it was broke to the equivalent of a two year old with twenty rides.
-It was to the point where it would walk, trot, and lope, and could be trail ridden on.
I would think that another 60 days of foundation work would need to be done on the horse and it would be lightly started after the 90 days. I would expect that it would know the pattern and could slow lope, but would need to be worked at home. |

| Since the horse has absolutely no buttons, and was trained as a 2yr old now four, she would have to be restarted.
90 days I would expect all buttons, walking and trotting a perfect pattern.

I'm the odd person out but I've ended up with some horses that were started too young, pushed too hard and are not not sound.............and I want mine to be able to do more than run and turn so being very broke is a must.

| The mare was what i would consider a really good trainer at 20/30 rides. Walk, trot and canter stop and turns nicely. Trail ride and ride all around shows. Very quiet.
