| I had rotator cuff repair back in '09, but the pain is back again and it's time to start investigating. Have any of you had a shoulder replaced? If so, are you happy with the movement? |

| I had a partial shoulder replacement done 6 years ago, my surgery was termed a "salvage procedure" because a staph infection from a cortisone injection destroyed all of the cartilage and some tendon attachments. I'd say I'm at 65% of where I used to be, they say if I get a total shoulder replacement I should be even better, but I'm a chicken- I don't have the best luck with doctors!  |

| Trickster J, I am a little paranoid too. My husband almost died after a knee replacement last year when they didn't monitor Meds in a rehab center. They had him on a blood thinner, and we didn't know there was a problem until he began throwing up blood. He lost 60 lbs, was in ICU on a ventilator for two weeks, and was bleeding everywhere. It just wasn't his time yet. |

Location: Here | Just remember you can lift or brace yourself. We were told eat bathe bathroom brush your teethe are basically the limits. But being pain free has its benefits |

Yikes- crazy what can happen when you are with the "professionals." For sure you want to find a doctor who knows how to LISTEN to you- there are so many who don't even "see" you, they just focus on the part of you they are going to operate on. And then they leave you to the nurses with minimal instruction- if they even do that. |

Location: Montana | In the last 18 months I had both a total knee and shoulder replacement. No problems! Takes a while for complete healing, but the pain relief is great. No limits on activity. One month post shoulder there is some pain with twisting movement, but better every day.

Location: Okla | I'm glad to hear the positives, because I'm looking at a replacement myself. I had a torn rotator cuff in '05 and when they did the surgery, he told me he did all he could I really needed a replacement since all the soft tissue was wore out and it was basically bone on bone. the doctor told me he wouldn't do it I was too young, and to wait until I couldn't stand it anymore. Well...that time is now. The pain is getting worse. I can't even reach around to my back pocket with that arm. But I'm being a chicken and havn't been back to the dr. |

Location: Louisiana | I haven't been posting recently, but I was just browsing through the posts tonight and stopped on this one. Maybe I was directed to your post to help you?
In June of last year, my husband had a total shoulder replacement, due to breaking the "ball" of the shoulder in a fall. He was 61 at the time. He worked diligently on the physical therapy (this is absolutely crucial), and in about 3 months, he had almost 100% motion back. He is a very active farmer and is constantly using that arm for heavy lifting, pulling, swinging tools, climbing on and off tractors, etc. It was his left shoulder, and he is left handed. He uses it now, like nothing ever happened. Five months after his shoulder replacement, we vacationed in Cozumel for a week, and he went scuba diving 6 times! He says it wakes him up sometimes at night now, if he's sleeping on it for a long time. He just turns over and goes back to sleep. He did so well with the shoulder replacement, that he decided to have his knee replaced 6 months later. He has done great with that, too, and he says he is amazed at how pain free he is now. The two things to remember are, research the doctors and choose one who comes highly recommended. And totally dedicate yourself to doing the physical therapy. And afterwards, get ready to be pulled aside every time you have to go through a metal detector like airports.... But it's not a big deal. They are used to people having knee and shoulder replacements. So just do it!  |
