Can someone explain amateur barrels? How hard is it to qualify for world?

It just depends on where you are and how many are entered...

All aqha shows award points per class based on entries. For example if there are 3-5 horses the first place horse earns 1 point. If there are 6-9 horses first horse gets 1 point, 2nd place earns .5 point. You can find aqha point chart on line. Every event for the aqha world show then has a set number of points needed to qualify for the world show. Again that's available on line. The tough part is finding shows with good entry numbers in the classes you are  trying to earn points in. I'm in sk Canada and there aren't any shows that offer barrels. I did qualify for worlds this year in open ranch pleasure and while only 4 points were needed it still wasn't easy in my area due to the low number of entries in the ranch pleasure. I pretty much had to win first in every open ranch class under every judge (some shows are double/triple judged) which helps for accumulating points. So depends where you live. If you are in say Texas I would think aqha shows with barrels offered are pretty common. I'm going to try to qualify for world next year in amatuer ranch pleasure and I'm trying to find shows with more ranch pleasure entries. Thinking I will have to haul into North Dakota next year to try to qualify. I'd love to qualify my new Reiner some year in amatuer reining, however more points are needed for that class so it would be impossible to qualify where I live without hauling into the states or other provinces.

Hope that helped explain it. If I do qualify for worlds in amatuer next year I'm seriously considering going just to experience it. I typically score really well so I don't think I'd embarrass myself by going. At least I hope not. :).

I think this year you only need 4 points to qualify. AQHA has screwed with their shows so bad, no one wants to even bother so they are struggling to get enough people to even qualify.

If you have double judged events in your area, go to those. You pay twice the entry fee, run once and get twice the points. Best way to get it done.

I agree and the cost is getting stupid. I have a goal to finish my ROM on my mare (3points left). And to maybe go to worlds once. After that my ranch pleasure/reining mare will be retired to brood mare or I might raise one baby on her then try her on barrels. My new Reiner isn't a ranch pleasure type so I will likely stick to strictly reining shows with her, they are expensive too but at least if you have a good run you can win a few $ to offset expenses. QH shows you can't win a dime.

If you get the AQHA journal shows are posted in the back, they are probably on their website as well. If you get any horse magazines for horse events in your area, they should also be listed there.

and I haven't been to a barrel race yet in WY that has jr or sr just Am or Open. I guess if I qualified to the AQHA world on a 5yr old I would just run in Jr?

If you want to show in Amateur classes, you must have an Amateur card.

I qualified and went to World in AM. Poles back before the 1/2 point system was in place, which meant there had to be 5 to get the point. The nearest shows that even offered speed classes were 4 hours away, but I hauled enough to get my mare's ROM & qualify. I also hauled an extra horse to the smaller shows to help build the class, and cross-entered reining & western riding to get help in my classes. That almost backfired on me once, as I nearly won the reining class (unintentionally, of course). My mare had been a reiner before I got her, and had a pretty good spin. Her slides, of course sucked because she didn't have on sliding plates.

I stopped showing AQHA after that, mainly because of the expense. Points do't pay the feed bill, after all...!

The Journal has become more confusing since they started to "level "classes .
Good Luck

the number of points needed to qualify varies from one event to another and from year to year. I think barrels this year was about 11 or 12 and poles was about 10. (I think--I looked it up once but that was a while ago).

To get an amateur card you can not have taken money for training horses or giving riding lessons. If you ride someone else's horse at a barrel race and get part of the prize money as payment for riding the horse you can be ineligible for an amateur card. I used to have an AQHA amateur card and still have an APHA amateur card. Have had it for years.

Also on the amatuer card. You can not have your WPRA card. I have seen so many girls who run pro and win. Then go to apha or Aqha and get them am card. You are not eligible.
