| Just curious how many feel this is important to pregnant mares? I ask because I had a friend lose her foal at 9 mos last year right after giving this vaccine so she refuses to vaccinate with it on her broodmares this year. I use to give it to my pregnant mares years ago when I did some breeding but with my current mare it took me 3 years to get her in foal and I am VERY nervous to do anything that could be a risk to her. I do know my vets opinion on this but I would like to hear others as well. |

| My vet said to give it at 5, 7, and 9 months. He said I needed it. I will give the other two. My mare is 20 this year and that may be the reason. |

Location: EDGE OF INSANITY | We always give ours at 5,7,9 mo of pregnancy. Rhino causes abortions so ours always get it |

| My mom has never given it. She has lost a few foals to abortion, but usually due to an accident. I did give the 5 month shot to my 20 year old mare this year, as I have a ton of money into this foal! She didn't settle last year, so we had to rebreed her this year. She will get the 7 and 9 month shots also. |

| I vaccinate all mine and never had a problem with it
Edited to add: I know a lot of stallion contracts will not honor a LFG if mare was not vaccinated so if it's a outside stallion I would read the contract before making a decision

Location: ND | I have never vaccinated my bred mares with this and have no intention of starting. Have also never had a mare abort do to Rhino. |

| Thank you all for the replies. I knew it was probably going to be divided answers. I want to do what's best for my mare, but this vaccine has pros and cons. I am just really leery as it took me so many years to finally get her in foal. |

Location: Texas | I always do it. Honestly, the science behind that vaccine is for herd health. If you have a herd of broodmares and that virus goes through your herd, you can abort a large portion of your foal crop. That has a huge impact. If you have a bunch of mares and vaccinate and one or two aborts, you still have most of your foal crop.
If you have just a couple broodmares and you don't have a lot of traffic in your barn, meaning those mares don't get exposed to anything, the risk of them getting the virus is low and the need for the vaccine is reduced.
I give it because we keep our broodmares in the barn with our barrel horses that leave the house 3-4 times a month and get exposed to things when they are at races. |

| I vaccinate because my broodmares come in contact with the horses that we haul. (Knock on wood) We haven't had any issues with the vaccine. If my mares were in a pasture by themselves where they wouldn't be exposed to the horses we haul I might reconsider vaccinating. |

was that the only vaccine she gave her mare when she aborted?? curious.
