I kept dropping my whip so I've changed to a over and under. Im having a problem getting hold of it until I'm almost back at the alley. Is there a secret to using this thing or do I just have to get used to having it?

I fold it in half and loop it through my rear belt loop. The loop keeps it in place unless I get really jarred out of position, but it's laying right over my thigh so I can find it right away and it pops right out. Course if you whip between barrels you've still got to find it on the way home.

I want a thicker one I think with beadwork on it, wondering if that wouldn't lay better. I've also considered trying a rope one.

I made one out of a breakaway roping rope.  Nice and stiff so when I laid it over my thigh it stayed there.  Used it for 30 years and it never wore out.

I put a rubberband through one of the belt loops on my jeans and put the over and under through there, so it sits right on my leg and is easy to grab.

I've seen girls put a rubber band around their wrist and run the whip through it, I've also seen someone run in through their belt and it's popped up right in front of them.

I rubber band mine to my belt with a chain of 3-4 rubber bands. I run the whip through the last band in the chain, then lay it around the back of my saddle just behind the cantle. When I want it, I reach behind me and run my hand forward, palm-first, until I catch the whip. That way I can find it without looking down. It works best on my gray horse. My bay somehow gets it off the saddle and dangling in front of my leg by the second barrel so I am usually doing good to find it before the time line on him. LOL.

I have used these since 2003 and love them. It has enough body, you can use it as a whip if you don't want to over and under.  And it stays right where I put it until I pick it up.  http://www.thetrickedoutpony.com/ReadyWhips.html

I put a piece of wire and vetwraped over it, for about a foot to make it stiffer and easier to find.

I do this, plus I use a piggin' string.  The extra body and "curve" helps it stay right across my thigh.

Same here, took the end that I cut off the calf rope to make my breakaway rope and have been using it for years. Stays over my leg and easy to find. I think after years of using an over/under it becomes second nature to find them.

This is what I do. Its second nature for me to grab where it is attached to my belt loop.

I have made in the hundreds now beaded ones.  They are easy to get ahold of.  But most everyone just buys them because they look cool.  I didn't know you were actually supposed to use them!  haha

Not trying to steal the thread by any means, but what kind of over-unders to y'all prefer? Leather? Nylon? Leather ends? Horse Hair ends?

I like wide leather ends.  Second would be the knotted rope end. The narrow leather ones HURT without using much force. I won't do that to a horse again after I accidentally got my bare leg with one many years ago--threw that sucker away when I got home.   I've seen some "well-respected" people hide chain links in the ends...no comment.

Chain?!?! Seriously!! If you have to whip your horse with chains to keep his running... I'm gonna shut my mouth before I get mean... GRRR!!! People!! anywhoo.... I'm wanting to get one that isn't severe at all, just there in case I ever need a little extra encouragement. And by encouragement I mean swing it across his rump rather than whipping the tar outta him!

Muscle Memory.....it's attached to your saddle horn so simply slide your hand down it. Practice this way for a while and it becomes automatic to simply slide your hand down.
