I never had this issue in Texas...but here in Arkansas it's quite a bit more wet all the time. I store my saddles and most tack in the house as it's climate controlled and the tack room/feed room is not. I have a headstall/breast collar set that I haven't used in a year and it was left out in the tack room. It is just covered in mold.

What is the best method to clean the leather and get it usable again? Vinegar? Then condition the leather?

Samt thing happened to me in my new barn until I got a dehumidifier. All I did to clean my saddle was get a sponge and leather conditioner and cleaned all the leather. I think it worked fine anyway :)

Well oiled tack mildews more. Mix a little vinegar with water and wipe down with that.

We've always mixed a little bleach and water to wipe down and kill the mold spores. Then oil as normal.

All of our tack got soaked when our barn was hit by a tornado. Everything ended up covered in mold. I mixed 1/4 cup of bleach with 1/2 cup of Murphy's Oil Soap in a bucket of hot water. I scrubbed all the tack and then rinsed it with a damp sponge. Two years later and the mold has still not reappeared.

When my tack molded, I soaked it in some very warm water for about 10 minutes then I wiped most of the mold off while the tack was in the water. After most of the mold was gone, I let it hang dry for a day then used saddle soap and conditioner like usual.
