Does anyone have a horse with kissing spine? My mare is out with a suspensory injury and she is at a rehab place. At this place they also went over her whole body just to make sure nothing else happened from her tearing her suspensory. Well it showed that there was little circulation to the back, which made me think of kissing spine. So bring her to the vet, and sure enough she has just a slight case of kissing spine in an area. What saddles, saddle pads, and supplements do you have them on?

It depends on how severe the case, but chiro, acupuncture, massage.

I also use BOT w/ sore no more to help keep her muscles loose, bute for a few days prior, during and after running. Good warm ups and cool downs.

As far as a specific saddle and pad, I'd say it's more of how your horse is built- just make sure it's properly fitting your horse and a pad with a little extra support.

Mesotherapy I've also heard can help a lot.

I have two horses that have kissing spine per x-ray:
First horse has shown classic KS symptoms over the past years. I wish I would have gone with my gut and gotten xrays sooner, rather than assume that she is a hormonal mare.

Horse 2 fell apart on me very suddon last April. Aside from
Epm her xrays also showed KS. Long story short, after a recent bone scan we figured that KS is not her problem. She has a suspensory injury in combination with some other bone problems.

Some KS stats from Dr Honnas who is the man for it: out of 100 horses about 30 show spine issues on their xrays. Out of these 3 have true kissing spine.

Oh man, I'm feeling the pain, figuratively for me, literally for my horse. Discovered it middle of last year, treated him, in June, then he ended up with EPM, undid the treatment for KS. Going to start back next week with meso therapy and injections of the key points. Don't know where you are, Dr. Honnas in Bryan is the guru.

My gut tells me that I should probably go straight to surgery, but both docs I'm working with say try at least one, probably 2 sessions of the injections/meso therapy first. Now that we know what we're looking at and do the other adjunctive stuff, might can make it work. I'm working with 2 docs, one that was trained by Honnas and another that works with him on other issues.

I think KS and other back issues are bigger than most of us realize, sure was for me. There have been some recent articles. Apparently until large, clinic based x ray machines came to clinics about 10 years ago, you couldn't really see the detail, and it wasn't really realized how much of an issue it is. Most horses that are 'problems' or buck are typical back issues. Go to The Horse.com and register for online articles and search for it. Frankly just downright scary.

You don't see this posted much here. I like the idea of NSAID a few days before and a few days after. I had another issue one time and had pre entered a big show, so I used bute for hocks until I could get him done. He was better. Now I know was probably the back all the time that made his hocks an issue.

Would like to hear others experiences with this.....just when you thought hocks and stifles were problems...now their dang back!

Oh, and Martha Wright runs a horse with this. She uses Honnas, I don't think she's had the surgery, but she uses a Vernon Purdy saddle on her's. It moves the bars lower and this seems to help. You can find him on Facebook.

Mine is mild If you are not close to Dr. Honnas and you can get x-rays, you can send to him email and responds fast! What I do with mine is backing with his head down and making him round his back with me standing beside him by rubbing under stomach area and also by scratching his butt area to make him round his back also. This is also good for bringing one back from epm. I couldn't ride for quite awhile after treating for epm because he had nerve damage. I had to start out doing ground work. and this does work. good luck

I've had one injected with steroids between the overlapping spinous processes and it seemed to help.  I agree with the poster who stated that backing them up in a rounded frame will help too- and dorsal arches as well-

Martha used Dr Honnas to diagnose the KS but she uses a vet in Weatherford to actually treat. She does flourscopic guided injections inbetween the effected vertebra. The only real treatment for KS is injections or surgery. As far as saddles and pads....a good fitting saddle an pad are beneficial but really won't make things better.

Curious, do you have a KS horse? What are your thoughts on mesotherapy in conjunction with injections?
