| Please tell me your experience with hindgut ulcers. Possible treatment, symptoms, how you diagnosed it ect.
I used the blood fecal test and my horse tested for hindgut ulcers. Not gastric ulcers. Doing my homework on where to go from here.
Thanks |

Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | I had to pull mine off of ALL beet pulp - even the non-molassas kind, no molassas, no joint supplements --- you'll be hard pressed to find a premix feed that doesn't have beet pulp or molassas. (Total Equine doesn't)
At the time, they didn't have a test for it but he was a classic case and had all the symptoms. We scoped and he was clear; Stomach tap was clear, fecal clear but RBC & WBC were bottomed out. Vets didn't have an answer and their protocols wouldn't keep him on his feed. So, I did my own research and I let his appetite tell me what was working.
I had to feed straight grains and a non-molassas base supplement or else he'd go off of his feed. I fed alfalfa cubes and grass hay. Horsepower Herbs' Gut Proof helped tremendously and I only fed it for a while.
Regular gastic ulcer supplements did not make a difference -- I know now it was because they work in the stomach and not the gut. I also fed flax -- it helps to promote natural mucous which protects the lining in the gut.

Location: NC | EquiShure!! It was designed specifically as a hind gut buffer for horses with Subclinical acidosis. And the KER website has a lot of good articles on studies they have done on subclinical acidosis. There's a good bit of info out there just like there is for EGUS. Same rules apply.
All the hay you can give them. All the turnout you can give them. Low starch/high fat feed.
I would start Forco too if you don't already use it. Lots of goodies for the entire digestive system in Forco. It never hurts to add it and it's pretty affordable compared to other things. |

I'm currently reading up on succeed since that's the test I used to diagnose her. It looks interesting but costly. $100/ month maintenance, but I guess if it fixes her, its worth it. |

Once the horse no longer has ulcers after modifying their program, the horse shouldn't need to be put on a preventative/maintenance program.
I would be looking at eliminating the cause of the hind gut ulcers, I would be looking in depth to the supplements the horse is on, and what I can do to reduce stress, as well as switching to a high fat low NSC diet |

How much did the test cost and did you have to go through a vet to order? |

Around $30, yes I had to go through a vet. It's easy though. You take them a sample of poop that is only a few hours old. |
