I have heard many different opinions. My vet I am currently using prefers aquatread because he says because of the way their head is up high going around in the pool is hollows out their back whereas in the aqua tread their head position is more natural and allows them to use their hind end more and round out their back.

I have done both but usually use a pool out of convienence since it's 5 mins from my house and open hours I am available. The closest aquatread is not open by the time I get off work and could haul over.

I also remember someone telling me if they had stifle problems then the aquatred was better.

Aquatread.

Swimming places their back in a hollowed out position and can stress it. With swimming you are also not conditioning the same muscles that are used for running. This is what a few vets and racetrack people have told me.

As a massage therapist, that's what I say too.

I have done both and I have seen better results swimming if you are trying to improve their cardiovascular system. Mine came back from swimming super fit and did not get out of breath and it really tucked up his belly after 2 weeks. After 3 weeks of aquatred at a different facility I did not see much of a difference in his wind. Or overall appearance. He has kissing spine surgery and his surgeon/vet Dr Honnas said swimming was fine. The only time I have heard that swimming was a big no no was if they had stifle problems.

My vet has a swimming pool down the road from my barn. Not even a 2 min haul and last summer I took my older guy swimming 3-4 times a week and couldn't believe how much he improved. It was great his times in the arena went down and he had a ton of stamina. He didn't get winded as quick. If there was an aqua tred close to me (closest one is 2 hours away) there's no way I'm hauling that far when there's a pool down the road. Every horse has a different "swim style" so to speak but I loved it!

I think both have their place. Swimming has always provided more lung power, in my experience. I like that the Aqua Tread offers some concussion and muscles them a bit differently. I do not like to swim one super often, but it definitely has it's uses.

My vet says no swimming if there are stifle issues. If I remember correctly he said swimming is like us doing cardio workouts and the aquatred is more going to build muscle

Swimming is low/no impact cardio.   It has its' uses.  I don't think you are going to hurt your horse using either method, but I would consult with your own vet.
