As pertaining to my other post about my horse hiccuping before I tighten her girth, someone told me to try aloe Vera juice (one cup) in her feed for possible Ulcers. Has anyone ever used this? I would like to try a few things before I start spending $100s on ulcer medications.

Aloe Vera is a waste of money IMO

If you want to know if you need to treat your horse, have the horse scoped this is the only definate way to tell, but if you get generic or compounded omeprazole it is actually cheaper then the scope.

I read one study that said over 75% of performance horses have ulcers.

I have all mine on aloe Vera juice for years. One was scoped and did have ulcers. We treated with meds now I use the juice as a preventative. It will prevent them but idk about curing them.

It won't treat ulcers. I think aloe Vera juice is more of a band aid. Need to treat correctly and spend money to cure ulcers

It doesn't treat them, it's more for prophylactic purposes. Scoping only sees the esophagus and stomach. If the horse has hindgut ulcers, you won't be able to see those.

I personally would spend the money to treat them. Ulcers can be devastating to horses and if you have ever had a serious one yourself you will want to treat them ASAP! Trust me.... They can change the whole horse. I say easiest and cheapest way is to just treat them before you go and spend $$ on stuff that may or may not work then ending up spending the $$ anyways for the treatment, all the while your horse is in pain from the ulcers.. JMHO

I've heard that all omepreazol is different, my vet makes a special mix that costs more but apparently has worked better then others, it's $175 and he said when symptoms go away I can stop using it
