So my gelding ( I've seen these before under his throat when he was younger) has developed these swollen knots under his throat area between his cheeks. I noticed it once before last year when we first started turning him out with out horses and access to round bales. Then again, also when we started turning him out with other horses access to round bales in the last two weeks. Could this be an allergy to hay? It doesn't come off painful for me to probe it. or that it bothers him at all. I just want to keep an eye on it, and get opinions if anyone else has encountered something like this. I've had a horse that was allergic to alfalfa bales and he choked on me once. Considering bug is in a back lot field and only sees people two times a day for feedings and watering, or when I come to get him. I'd rather like to know if I should be worried and move him back to smaller pasture with square bales, or if I'm just being one of those bubble wrap proned horse mommas.

Sounds like strangles. A pic would be helpful. Could be he poked something in there and it is trying to fester.

if its on both sides and where the nodes  are it could be allergies.. or something in the pasture...my gelding would get them as well and they would go away..it also can mean a infetion in his body hes fighting... is he feverish at all? if so then id be concerned..

They can be caused from many many things.
They are glands just like we have in our neck
Sometimes young horses ( yearlings) will get knots there as they start building an immune system.
Allergies can cause them to be swollen.
We have had a couple of weanling do that when they are cutting jaw teeth,
They can also bang them on something like a fence post. This happens often with horses.
Some horses also just have larger glands than others & they aren't really swollen at all.

My rope gelding develops these he has no cough no fever no other symptoms just the swollen lymph nodes. they flare up at some times during the year. Mostly in the spring and in the fall and when we have a slightly dusty bale. My vet gave me a powder form of an antihistamine and it has worked wonders.

I had a gelding that had these symptoms, ended up being strangles.  I'd take him to a vet.  JMO

They have lymph nodes under their jaw just like we have in our neck. It could be normal, it could be allergies, it could be more serious if they are hard and really swollen.

This was my first thought as well ... even if the knots have been displayed before, it could be another round and worse this time.  JMO as well.

Last time the owner of the barn diagnosed it as allergies. It is on both sides of his throat. Other than the knots he's not showing any other symptons aside from an occassional runny nose. But then, it's gone from 60 back down to 25 then back up to 55 in the last 5 days. The vet comes every Thursday, going to ask him just to look at it.
