I've got a horse who has something going on in his lungs. He is not a bleeder. I noticed at the lope his breathing was deeper/not right. After a hard work at the lope he will have white discharge coming from just one nostril. He just acts like he cant breathe well. Initially I thought it was due to him being out of shape, but it's been 3 weeks and still no better. I began giving him a little ventipulmin daily about a week ago to see if that would help open him up, but still battling this. Do you guys have any suggestions?

I would have your vet scope and see what his airway looks like, and if that white junk goes down his trachea or stays in his upper airway. I would also consider a BAL (bronchioalveolar lavage) to get a sample of what might be in his lungs. Then you will have a definitive answer as to what's going on and you can treat accordingly.

I second the scope.

I would rather solve the problem rather then mask it wig drugs

Yep we had a horse who wasn't a bleeder but suddenly came up with a unilateral nasal discharge and a cough. no fever, and it didnt respond to antibiotics. Transtracheal wash didnt give anything conclusive. a few weeks later we went to our referral vet and did a scope and BAL. She had fresh blood in the BAL even though she hadn't even been RIDDEN in a month. Lots of neutrophils and sand as well. So we started nebulizing her with fluticasone and tapered her down to a twice weekly regimen.. she's all cleared up now and better. Had we just trial and errored it, we would never have gotten to that point, and never would have realized how irritated her lungs really were. She is not an EIPH bleeder either but has inflammatory airway disease.

I agree with a vet check.. But i highly reccomend Lung Aid by Choice of Champions. My horse has had alot of respiatory issues in the past as well. I keep him on Lung Aid and havent had any more issues since i started using it . If you want to try it use coupon code "cockk" in the promo section @ www.choiceofchamps.com for 10% off and free shipping. Lung Aid 100% works to support respiatory issues.

BAL hands down is first step. I do two a year on my mare because she has severe inflammatory airway disease (also not a bleeder). I use Flovent inhaled steriods and salbutimol. I refuse to use ventapulmin on her because she also has an immune issue and the inhaled steriods are hard enough on her.

I have recently had live blood cell analysis done on her and this guy is pretty sure he can get her issue under control with herbal remedies. Currently she is on a product called 'Defend' which clears the lungs of mold and dust. It is a liquid that I give 3 times a day (20 drops each dose) and he is fairly certain she will be able to run steriod free within 30 days.

I have had good success in keeping the issue a little more under control with a product called The Edge (theedgeup.ca) and when she's on full dose I can generally get rid of salbutimol. I do always use Flair Strips on her when I run and I use a hay steamer. I never haul hay in my stud stall and do not use shavings.

I have learned that changing the way you do things to eliminate dust in the environment is a big things with horses that have respiratory issues that are not necessarily bleeding. I could go on and on about all the changes I have made that seem to be making a difference lol but if you have any questions about what I've gone thru, feel free to pm :)

I would definitely get the vet out there to scope. Will save money and time in the long run. Then you can have THE make up a special formula to help if your horse needs it. Hopefully the vet will figure it out. good luck

Do not mess around with this. Kept telling and telling some friends to get their horse scoped and do a BAL. They said we see no blood so he's not bleeding This went on for 3 months before they finally took him. They spent over 2k in meds alone to get the infection completely gone. Sadly due to the scaring and damage in his lungs he had to be retired right when he was really showing potential.

I agree with this ^^^^^^^ i tell people all the time. Dont risk permanent damage to the lungs.

Doubling down on the scope.  Mine had runny noses, would cough a couple of times when first warming up but did not have any exercise intolerance so I did not think much of it.  I attributed it to allergies, had moved to a new place.  Had them scoped and all of mine had developed nasopharyngeal cicatrix.  I had never heard of it, an unknown irritant causes swelling and scarring on the pharynx and left untreated can lead to needing a trachea to breath.   You have to remove them from the irritant-  stall them 24/7 or there is a vaccine that works in some horse but not all.   Luckily mine responded to the vaccine and healed while still being able to graze 24/7.

Do research! And sometimes it isn't enough so get second opinions if you don't feel good in your gut! Had allergy tests on my mare that I thought might be a bleeder but scope showed other things. She is allergic to the world. Got the shots and still things didn't seem right and she wasn't running like she had.....had a second opinion done and she now had pneumonia ..... Listen to your horse!

I'm curious if it's allergies? My gelding had a cough while warming up (only time he did it). Scoped and he had some inflammation. Gave him 2.5CCs of Dex a couple hours out and he would be fine. Had the vet run allergy test and the biggest thing he's allergic to are oats and ants. Poor guy had oats in his feed and ants in his pasture. Hoping he's a new and improved horse if I can eliminate what causes him grief and treat him.

Please haul him to a vet before it's too late!!
