My little mare has gotten so ratey going into her turns I feel like I am pushing soo hard and she's still going in slow and then I am working on getting her out of the turns quickly. I know coming out she's been waiting on me and I am really trying to get up ahead of her coming out so she's not waiting on me. Any tips or things I can work on? I am trying to only practice the pattern during our once a week lesson because we have a small arena at home and because the more we practice the more she wants to rate and just kind of lolly gag around. I am the one that needs the practice anyway lol. My last horse was a big lanky free runner so I am just trying to figure out this ratey little cowy thing!

The harder you drive the horse into the turn, the snapper the turn will be. I have a ratey cow horse, I LOVE him, to get the faster turns, I have to drive all the way to our spot and sit. I recently had our 2nd child, so my core muscles aren't built back where I'd like them, so he's waiting on me also. I'm working to build those back up quickly as well.

I had a little quick ratey mare. I had to make sure I really drove her into the barrel, almost past it, sat, and seemed had to get up over her before we even finished the turn. Also, I did rollback drills. Off the pattern, down a fence. Id ride, turn like a barrel and hustle her right out of the rollback. I did use a whip to start just to make sure she knew what I was asking and to make sure she knew I wasn't joking ( She was that kind of horse lol ) I wouldn't tear the hide of her, but a simple little tap was enough for her to get that butt under her and boogie on out. With her, that really helped her move on the barrels...Did that make sense?

I had a horse like this and to tune her up I would trot to my pocket and then lope her around the barrel a couple times....come out of the barrel slow back to a trot and then at the next barrel pocket i would lope her around them again. When I did this I wouldn't let her get real tight on the barrel would make her give me space all away around the barrel.

Yea that makes a lot of sense. I will have to try that I feel like I am pushing as hard as I can and she's still just cruising into them and lolly gaging around! She's a tough little mare that also has that kinda personality that she has to know you mean business! I am not naturally an aggressive rider so I need to work on that with her I guess!

Horses that cow a lot rate a lot. They lock in on the barrel just as they would on a cow.Have to break the lock on the barrel to free them up.Keeps the forward motion and feet moving forward.
