For any of you that live cover, what do you use to tease your mares?  Or do you only ultrasound them?  I don't really want to use my Stallion to tease them to check for heat so I was considering buying a small stud pony or something.   Any suggestions or input?

Right now Duncan does it. But I wouldn't hesitate to buy a pony or even a miniature. There are some TB farms that run a mini stud with their broodmares and they know when the mares are in by who he hangs out with

I used my stallion to tease my mares for the past several years and really didn't like doing it that way. I run things on my own and honestly didn't feel it was the safest way and I ended up missing some of my quieter mares because I had to bring them out of pasture to my stud. So this year I bought a pony stallion who is going to be in an escape proof pen in the mare pasture so he can talk to them freely. I'm hoping this will work better.

The tb farm I worked at used a teaser stallion. He was a big flirt, got everyone all hot and bothered. He broke his shoulder as a yearling so he really couldn't jump many mares but he sure loved on them. I loved that horse!!

edited to add, he was kept in a stud paddock, then he'd get led around to the broodmare paddocks and stalls.

So, for ease of handling and dealing with, would a mini be sufficient?  Maybe thats a dumb question, lol.

I tease with my stud I have a couple of small pastures that are on three sides of his paddock with a 12 ft alley and I can usually tell from there. I am by myself usually but he is good I can can bring the mares up to his paddock to check as well. I have had a couple of mares who wouldn't show much if you had them caught so this works well I just have to watch for the subtle signs on those quiet mares. I don't have a big enough operation to warrant a pony stud.

Mine is 36" tall. If I had a more choices I would have gone with a 10-12hh Welsh pony or quarter pony, that way if it accidently got out and bred some mares at least it wouldn't be a total loss Lol. Anyway Some of my mares were scared of the little guy till they figured out he was a horse. Mine is a doll and had been a kids pony for 15 yrs prior so he is very easy to handle and lead around.

If you have maiden mares and plan on jumping them, you'd need something capable of doing that. If you don't, then a mini would work as you wouldn't have any accidental breedings.

The people that have mares in foal to minis would beg to differ!  It CAN and DOES happen. (Where there is a will, there is a way!)  I had a TB gelding for a while that I used to tease my mares.  The TB farm I worked at has a pony stud for a while and a lot o the mares had ZERO interest.  They wither wanted to kill him, or were afraid of him.  He was more trouble than he was worth as you had to use a "horse" stallion for many of the mares anyway.

I tease with my stallion.  No need to deal with another stallion of ANY size!
And geldings can be a pain in the rear too!

We've teased with our stallion, our late stud I guess. But we never made it a huge deal, let him get too worked up. You can tell in a matter of minutes, for us usually 5 or less if she is willing. Ours would prance and beller up to the corral she was in and if she came over and showed any sign then I would catch her and we could get her covered. If she stood off and could care less about his Michael Jackson moon walk, then we just kept walking right on past and put him away.

Teasing can easily be over done and definitly ruin their libido, but you can try it and see how yours reacts. Ours was ridden a lot when younger and had a lot of manners.

I let mine breed in the pasture. The first few years I would hand breed and he was perfict if they were a lil why he would love on them and nibble and soft nickers until they were willing for him.

I put mares into the fields next to my stallion.  He has learned a balanced approach to this.  He does get worked up when they are really in heat and ready to cover, but he doesn't spend TOO much time about it until I show up with 'the' halter.  He'll talk to them, and do some of that moon walking the above poster was talking about, but he doesn't push boundaries.  I have 5' fences with electric on top, and now down the middle, so not much contact can happen.
