Getting a horse to run across the pen

I have an 8 year old gelding that I just can't seem to get him to run across the pen. This horse will fly outside breezing and I can get him to run to the first barrel but after that it's like I've dropped an anchor. Can anybody give me any tips on how to get him to realize he can run in a pen?

Is he bleeding?
Other than that all you can do is encourage him. I have set an odd shapped pattern in the arena with the 2nd way off the fence and whipped to the fence one time through, turned the barrel one time through, then whipped to the fence again. The gradually move the barrel closer to the fence. Some don't like running to a barrier.

If he runs outside when you ask and he runs inside the arena when you ask
(off the pattern/without barrels
) but refuses to on the pattern you need to check for bleeding and ulcers.
