Set small achievable goals with a timeline, then make a plan on how you will achieve the goal, once you have met the goal evaluate the learning process and make another goal.

Ie to get better balance on my horse

Plan to increase core strength (yoga, planks, personal trainer, crunches, etc)
Plan to ride without stirrups (read Sheri Cervi listens to music every other song she drops her stirrups at an extended trot)

Evaluation did you meet the goal, what you learned from the process, and where are you going to go from here.
