Are there any good training videos out there that you can use even if you don't have an arena to ride in?   A lot of the ones I have seen either have a lot of loping around barrels or off of the fence.  I just don't feel comfortable loping horses especially younger horses who don't always use themselves properly, in small circles.  I don't have an arena to work them off the fence doing roll backs and stuff either.  just wide open fairly hilly fields.   When its dry for about a month straight I have a nice flat grassy area I could use too.

I personally really like Dena Kirkpatrick's DVD set because she really emphasizes how slow and perfect will go a long ways and I like the Clinton Anderson and Sherry Cervi one. I too don't have an arena at my house so I have to improvise with pastures and hay fields. Especially this time of year you have to be really careful out there. I really think you can use many videos even if they are in an arena you just have to think outside the box and adjust. Obviously its not the greatest idea to lope small circles in a field right now but maybe be you can lope big ones and work on speed control and whatnot into the small ones. I hope that helps!

I ride in the fields around my house, when the crops aren't in and generally I will set up cones, poles and barrels and do such things as figure 8's, a mini reining pattern (No spins or slide, just loping and stopping) I work on collection and moving their body between cones on the diagonals and circles......having no arena walls definitely helps me to concentrate on keeping my horses straight even if I have to use the cones and ride to them....

All of them are. You should be happy you have so much area in which to work in. Think outside the box. With that much area you could really change it up and keep on going.

During the summer I never ride in the arena, all of my work is done outside, and if I had a choice I probably wouldn't ride in an arena at all. I think you can get a LOT accomplished without even using a barrel.
