Location: IL | I'm looking for a rehab protocol I can follow to bring a horse back from a suspensory injury. I think the hardest thing from a suspensory injury is making the horse strong enough that he doesn't reinjure himself again. He's had 3 rounds of shockwave, stall rest, then very small pen turn out. We do hand walk him quite a bit. He won't be a year out until June, but I'm looking into different protocols. Any advice would be great. |

Location: Oklahoma | I am looking into swimming or aquatred. I had the go ahead to start legging my gelding back up, but was diagnosed with EPM and he's now had an additional seven weeks off since the suspensory injury was cleared to go back to work. We have an appointment next Monday and I have plenty of questions for my vet! |

| I did PRP, sweated with runner's relief at night and iced during the day. 100% recovery from 40% high tear on rear. I did not keep him stalled like the vet wanted. I did start the "controlled exercise" at 30 days per my vet. He had a very small run to begin with then by accident when I was on a trip my son let him in a 1/2 acre trap- this was 45 days into the injury. I about had a heart attack when I returned home and found him, took him straight to the vet. Vet was amazed at the progress from the 30 day checkup so I let him stay in the trap. I started letting him have a few hours of turn out at 4 months. He has been back running for 3 years. I think the extra movement allowed the scar tissue to heal strong and without binding. Once healed, my vet said the best precaution against reinjury is a long slow warm up with lots of walking and trotting. I ice after every run. Good luck.

Is it hind or front end suspensory?
It is a front end injury. I do have back on track quick wraps and we have started using them lately. (I didn't want to use them to soon after the shock wave) I wish we had a pool to swim him, but not available in our area. This is actually his 2nd time with this injury, so I really want to make him come back slow, but build a strong foundation. His tear wasn't even very bad. We really couldn't find it on Ultrasound and ended up doing a nuclear medicine test to see if it was a different injury, but his front did highlight in the test. Dr thinks he may have had a slight ovulsion fracture too. He said that actually the fracture is better cause it heals strong. |

Location: United States | When you vet says its okay, I would do lots of tack walking (riding at walk). Lots. And stay away front soft/deep footing. If your vet doesn't have an extensive return to work/rehab program for you...maybe he can help you get in touch with a vet who does. |

Location: Texas | My vet recommended going to he aquatred as it created the impact by foot hitting treadmill but the water was theraputic. Also did alot of walking and the. Some trotting. I would also invest in some iconoclast boots for when you ride and run as they hae the most suspensory support |

| Honestly, if he's suffering from suspensory injury again and again, you really need to review your shoer. Get help on getting the hoof angles right, stick to a five week-6 week schedule. Make sure you've got plenty of break over.
Build back slowly, Sherry Cervi has a good rehab program that I think is truly to the horses benefit. Try to stay away from too much long trotting. Try to stay away from deep ground.

| I have a document that my Vet gave me about how to rehab a horse from tendon and ligament injuries. If you give me your email address, I will send it to you. The document was written by a Vet and is very thorough.
