Location: Cap'n Joan Rotgut.....alberta | Lyme disease might not be the most prevalent equine disease you face with your horses, but it does exist, and it can seriously impact a horse's health. And that's not all. Although documented cases of Lyme disease in horses are relatively rare, there are indications that the disease is on the increase.
Lameness, arthritis, neurologic disease, uveitis (moon blindness), and dermatitis have been the most commonly described signs of Lyme disease in horses, although, as we shall learn, both symptoms and test results often are confusing

Lymes in our part of WV is common. One horse of mine showed symptoms neurologically. He started sitting back and was constantly nervous (very out of character) so we ran the test on him and he was sure enough positive.. My other gelding showed no symptoms at all.. |

Location: never in the right place | My horse has had Lyme Disease ( I live in CT the birthplace for it). Swollen joints is the most common- mine started with a hind fetlock leg area, I thought he rolled and slammed his leg on the fence, so I cold hosed it, then it moved to to the front, by the time the vet came all 4 were swollen. She just gave him Tetrocycline or Doxicycline and did a titer test. The meds worked by the next day and when the titer finally came back it was only slightly in the positive zone. I did 2 rounds of meds just to make sure it was gone. Haven't had a problem since. It was a while ago so I can't remember all his symptoms

Location: Kentucky | I have a mare that is a nervous wreck, easily spooked, very flighty. Today is her 10th and final round of EPM treatment, but no change in behavior. I'm think I should have also tested her for Lyme. |

| It's very common here in NY, I've treated several. I tested one mare because she just seemed dull to ride (more like a pleasure horse than a four year old who had a couple months off- she should have felt fresh), also an unexplained slight swelling on a hind leg. She wasn't lame, just off slightly.
Anyway, I recommend one week tetra, two months doxy to follow as previously mentioned. I haven't seen as much luck without both. Good luck!! |

Location: Arkansas | I don't have a horse with it but, I have it and it is brutal.. There are some days where I can't even get out of bed or walk or ride for very long periods of time on good days.. If anyone knows of any human treatments that work, PLEASE let me know.. Thank you!!! |

Location: Kentucky | My mare does not have any swollen joints. She is spooky, flighty, and is a nervous wreck half the time. She has an issue when loping where her back feet will "slide" out from underneath her. I thought EPM at first, and today will be her final treatment. She was tested by Pathogenes, slight positive, and has been on Orogins. I wished I would have also tested her for Lyme at the time, but I had never even read up on it until recently. Her eyesight issues are what has me thinking Lyme. |

Location: Bandera, TX | A friend's horse had it last year. It took them forever to come up with the diagnosis. He was extremely anemic and in rough shape. Also had fever and swollen legs. He was very sick. When they finally found out about the Lyme Disease he needed almost 2 months of antibiotics. He is fine now and back to barrel racing.

Location: Drumright,OK | I battled it and have to live with chronic pain. Long story but I just asked my vet about it. I bought two fillies and got them home. The we're running out in a wooded are here in OK. Started grooming them and found they were covered in ticks!! I had never seen that many on a horse in my life!! I had Lyme so I was freaked out. I always use gloves now to remove ticks. You do not want to go through what I did and still do!! I was also wondering the effects on horses |
