I have 12 year old app with "navicular". We have done coffin/bursa injections and also tried tildren about a year ago... and we are still doing trial/error with corrective shoeing. Nothing has seemed to help him or even make him sound at all, and I hate the thought of putting him out to pasture. Anybody with previous experience? ANY suggestions would be helpful.. Thanks

The key for my old girl was an amazing farrier. He, with the help of my vet, was able to fit her with the perfect shoes and she was able to stay sound enough to run around with the other horses. She was never riding sound but she was also older and just seeing her running around and not stiff was enough for me.

It really depends on how severe the navicular changes are.  I know some have been seeing good results in navicular horses with a new drug called "Os-Phos", especially if you have already tried Tildren.

I second Osphos. Amazing results with 2 of my horses. And way cheaper than Tildren. You also give it yourself.

'navicular' is an old, generalized term. Are you near a facility with MRI? There are a ton of things that can go wrong in the foot, and all can fall into the 'navicular' symptom. However, if you can get to and afford an MRI it can tell you exactly what you're dealing with. Unfortunately, it still may be not so good news.

Good Luck!

I have an "app" with the navicular issue (see my picture). Initially when his symptoms started I felt there was an underlying cause and we got injections with no success so my husband suggested we stall him for a while. We put him in a small enclosure and put egg bar shoes on him for about 8 weeks. According to my vet, we saved him. He now is on previcox daily and we have run several cycles of equibone and we get injections as needed. He is also shoed with wedge pads. Just this week he got his Osphos shot. So I am eagerly awaiting the results. I also utilize PHT magnetic bell boots and 3n1 hock wraps that can be used on his front legs as well. Heck he has worn a power and balance bracelet on his ankle for 2 years. With all this said, I still believe that best thing we did was put him up when this all began and I didn't ride him for 6 months. This gave my horse the break he needed. He is now back to being run regularly with no issues. Good luck.

We had a gelding with "navicular changes" who had to be retired at 12. Had a new chiro out to work on our other horses and he asked about the big beautiful sorrel hobbling around and asked if he could take a crack at him for free... We obliged. 3 treatments later he was a new horse. Turns out he had a pinched nerve that was causing the pain. "Navicular changes" is apparently a term the vets use quite often, but as this chiro said "what has changed? What are they basing this on if they don't have past X-rays of that horse's feet?" Now this chiro seems kind of loopy to me, but I have to say he made and incredible difference in this big heading horse... Food for thought.

On my phone so please excuse my terrible spelling
