I have been struggling with loosing my friend to suicide this last month and another BB just lost her dad.

I am not a very religous person but some of my family are.  My family is LDS and I know what their beliefs are.  I would like to know what everyone else believes.  Is our path choosen by God or does he let us choose some of our decisions once we are down here or did we pick them out before we came?

Great question and I am so sorry there are some of you having to deal with such tragic losses right now. I believe God gave us free will to do what we can with our lives. I was taught that God wants us to come freely to him of our own choice. But for the life of me I cannot explain all the pain, grief, tragedies that happen in this world. I have been incredibly blessed in my life and I do feel guilty about it and struggle with wanting to shake my fist at God, demanding to know why others are so burdened in this life. One time my grandmother said maybe the ones who suffer so on earth go to heaven much faster than the rest of us. I am Catholic and we believe in purgatory. Purgatory is said to be a man made idea and it may well be, but it does help to explain the pain many people have to deal with. But I don't believe if you committ suicide you go to hell and my priest told us as teenagers that many people are in such pain that surely God would not keep them from heaven, for they didn't fully comprehend what they were doing. These are just my thoughts and I am in no way a knowledgeable, educated bible scholar, only your everyday mom.

I'm one of the people that has had more than my share of trials and tribulations. I believe that GOD gives us free will. AND the problems we face are that the devil is trying to get us to turn away from GOD... I hate when I hear people say why would a loving GOD let that happen to such a good person... I say the devil did it. His job is to get souls to turn against GOD. SO through all my stuff I don't blame GOD I trust in him that I had good doctors and people in my life to keep me around for a little bit longer.... and my BOYS are a big part of that... I have really great kids... just saying...

I also agree that God gave us free will. That means He did not require us to trust or believe in Him. He wants and desires relationship with us and wants all of us to spend eternity with Him; however, in the Bible, Jesus Himself said "I am the way, the truth and the life; no man comes to the Father except through me." Later on He says "the thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy; but I have come that they may have life, and more abundantly."It is an epic battle between good and evil and I truly believe God allows things that are bad to happen to us in order for us to desire a closer relationship with Him. He will not force Himself or His will upon us. But the greatest gift we can give back to Him is our will - So in everything, I pray "not my will but thy will be done" because I know if its His will and His way, it will be for our good.

Oh yes... I have been where you are... Many of us have. Who chooses our path? WE DO. The key word here is "choice". We are given a free will and we must turn to God freely. He already knows what path we will take and where the domino effect of that path will lead us. There are no surprises with God. The journey is for us. When you read scripture you begin to understand that this is a spiritual war and the end has already been written, even so, we must continue to "choose" the path that leads us to God rather than the one that leads us astray.

It is written that it rains on the just and the unjust. We must learn from the decisions that we make and the decisions that we see other people make as well. The nice thing about walking with the Lord is that no matter what happens in our lives, or the lives around us, we can walk in peace knowing that God is ALWAYS in control, even when we can not see Him or feel Him. I have learned that if I draw near to Him, He will keep His hand upon me and give me a peace that surpasses all understanding, no matter the circumstances. You must SEEK His face and He will show Himself to you and even in the midst of turmoil you will feel His presence and know that He has you in the palm of His hand.

Many prayers to those families... And for you... That God may put His hand on you, that you may seek His face, and that He may reveal His truths to you.
