My daughter just started running JRHS rodeo this year. The first half of the year, were all in state rodeos but we are getting ready for our first multi-state rodeo the end of March. We got the performance schedule and honestly it is confusing to me. All these years, we have only ran jackpots and D formats, so this is all new. Anyone willing to help me learn, I would appreciate it. She is running poles and barrels if that makes a difference.

Friday...
7:00 - Performance #1

Saturday....

9:00- 1st Go Slack for performance #1
11:30 - Performance #2 (completes the 1st Go)
6:00- Performance #3 (2nd Go slack to follow)

Sunday...
10:30 - Performance #4 (to finish the 2nd Go)

slack is just a slang term for another performance usually does not include roughstock events.  in your case 1st Go (round) begins with slack, performance #2 completes the 1st go round.  Performance #3 is slack again (but the beginning of the 2nd Go (round)

They run some in slack when there are too many entries to run them all at a performance which usually had 10 or 15 entires per event.

I think what you were just told by the last poster, but basically "slack" is the "extra" contestants who don't fit in the main draw. There is a set number of contestants (say 15 at a lot of rodeos) that go in the perf (performance). So, in this case, the "extra" that don't get to go in the Performance #1 on Friday will run on Saturday morning.

"Slack in Jr High and High school rodeos are usually ran in the mornings.  It is pretty much just another perf without the roughstock.

Looks like both events you get two runs (go rounds or go's).  Each person will have two runs, one in the first go round, or "go", and one in the second go round.  When they say 1st go slack, it's just meaning that everyone who doesn't draw up in a performance for their first run, "go", will have their first run in the slack, which will be at 9:00am on Sat morning. Does that help?

The performances are what you think of when you think of rodeo. It has broncs, roping, barrels, poles, bulls, etc. They try to keep rodeo performances about 2 hours in length so they don't get too long for the audience. Also, people that paid to watch a full rodeo peroformance do not want to sit through 80 barrel racers, 50 team ropers, etc. so they draw for 10 to 12 contestants of each event to run in each performance while the rest run in "slack".

Slack is for the ones that didnt get to run during the show, its for the extra runners. Here they run Slack in the Mornings befor the Rodeo, If I remember right some Slack was after the Rodeos.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I thought I got it figured out, at one point, but then I was not sure. I have heard the term "slack" many times but when I saw the schedule, I just wasn't understanding it.

I am really enjoying doing the Jr. High rodeo with my daughter and we are learning the ins and outs as we go along. What a fun experience.

That does help, Herbie. My confusion comes in on Performance #2, Which "completes the 1st go." Does that mean they are running the "1st go" three times? 2 performance times and one "slack time?" I hope I am explaining that right....

6:00- Performance #3 (2nd Go slack to follow) Sunday... 10:30 - Performance #4 (to finish the 2nd Go)

In HS rodeo we typically always had 2 perfs.  Friday night and then Saturday night.  Slack for Friday night was ran Saturday morning.  Slack for Saturday night was ran Sunday morning.

The 1st Go Slack, Performance #1, and Performance #2 all count for the 1st go or 1st round. The committee or judges will draw from everyone who is entered as to when they will make their first run out of those three options - so for example, if your daughter is drawn in the 1st go slack in one event, she will not do that event in Performance #1 or Performance #2. If she's in multiple events, she may end up riding in more than one of those options. The times and scores from those three options will be put together for the final 1st go results.
Then they'll move on to the second go. Performance #3, 2nd go slack, and Performance #4 all count for the second round, so everyone will be drawn again and compete again.

I think there's some decent explanations on here but maybe this will help. Think of it like two different rodeos, only both are on the same weekend. The paychecks for Go Round 1 will be determined across three sets of runs Performance 1, Slack and Performance 2. No matter which of the three time slots she runs in, there will be one set of placings, one set of checks, one set of points. Your first place person may run in slack and your 3rd place in Performance 2. It's like they divided 100 contestants up into three time slots but its still the same 100 contestants competing for the same money and points.

Then with the next set of two performances and slack its a completely different set of placings and money, basically starting all over, a new rodeo. But you happen to have both 'rodeos' (or jackpots if that helps) with three different time slots for each on the same weekend. Your daughter should still only make two runs all weekend, one for the 1st Go and 1 for the 2nd Go. The runs will just be in different time slots.

I don't know if that made sense . . .

That does help, Herbie. My confusion comes in on Performance #2, Which "completes the 1st go." Does that mean they are running the "1st go" three times? 2 performance times and one "slack time?" I hope I am explaining that right....

Thank-you so much. That is where most of my confusion was coming in.
