Hello all! I am contemplating a life decision & I would appreciate some feed back =) So I have always lived on the east coast & my mom is now living in Nampa, Idaha (right outside of Boise) I currently live in Upstate New York...I have always wanted to live more in a horse people area, a new job opportunity seems very intriguing & moving there I would have a better chance being in a job that I would enjoy since I would be so close to a major city. So my question...anyone have any pro/cons about living near Boise, Idaho?

I'd appreciate your feed back,

Thank you!

I'm not going to give you any life advice, but I will say this... I was born in Elmira, we moved to FL when I was 4, moved back to Elmire when I was 9 and moved back to FL a few years later. I thought about moving back up there after I finished school. Went up to the old house and stayed for two weeks, that was enough for me! lol

I lived in mountain home for about a year and a half. MH is about an hour east of Boise and while I did not like the city I lived in; I loved Idaho! I moved their for TX and it was a bit of a culture shock and I think if io would have lived in a bigger city I would have liked it even better. There are lots of semi pro rodeos within about 3 or 4 hours and there were a decent amount of jackpots to go to. I would not hesitate to move back there if life pointed me in that direction

I'd appreciate your feed back,

Thank you!

I'm a Boise native currently living in Pocatello and hating it. Boise area is the banana belt of Idaho, it's pretty warm for a northern state most of the year, our summers are hot and dry and our winters do get cold but I still ride from feb-november with a little bit of creative hauling to get inside in feb from time to time. As far as horse opportunities, you'll love it! I can go to a race within a 2 hour radius of my house almost every weekend, there's always something going on and there are some AMAZING trail riding opportunities and riding clubs that are family centered in the area. My club puts on a gymkhana style fun night every other tuesday starting in april and running through september as well as a bunch of trail rides and other events. the local NBHA club is great, they have a lot of events and if you want to branch out look up SIBRA they are based out of Twin Falls (2 hours away) but co sanction with a lot of other people, Van O barrel racing and BRN4-D are good too.

Job opportunities vary depending on your field, as a college student with mostly horse experience I've still done alright as far as work in concerned. Boise is a fairly diverse city as far as the state of Idaho is concerned, but that being said we are a red state. If you have kids/family take a good look at the education system in Idaho before making your decision, last semester I student taught in Nampa and while I enjoyed my kids the education system can leave some lacking.

Cost of living is decent, you can get a place out of town with a little room for horses for approximately $800 a month, the more amenities you want and the closer to town you want to be the cost goes up. I lived in the Twin Falls area for a while and comparatively Boise is high, but nationally not so much.

If you have any more specific questions feel free to shoot me a message and I'll be back in the Boise area for the summer so if you make the move and would like, you have a built in riding buddy.

I live in Caldwell Idaho the next town over from Nampa. I have lived all over for school, Chicago, Washington, New Orleans and Denver and moving here is the best decision I've made. If you are a barrel racer then there are several 4Ds to go to every week in different arenas with in an 30 min drive, if you rodeo there are a lot of armature rodeos with in an hours drive. There is so much opportunity with the horses, good vets, ect. We get 4 seasons, but not a ton of snow. The cost of living is low if you live outside of Boise, but can still enjoy the amenities of a small city when you go into Boise (concerts, good restaurants ect). I'm lucky and live 15 min from my work, however I know many people who live in the nampa area but commute into Boise for work and that is a frustration for some. Those are my two cents :)

If you are wanting to rodeo and jackpot, I would consider it.  I'm originally from WA and we would hit up some rodeos in ID.  There are a lot of small towns....its pretty "country" out there.  Kind of ugly at times, but that's ok.  Check out icarodeo.com and prowestrodeo.com and also Nwprorodeo.com and that'll show you the rodeo's in that region.  Very strong amateur rodeo scene in the NW.

Thank you all so much for your insight! Reading all of your posts has helped a lot and make it not just a thought but more of a consideration! I definitely am going to go out there and visit to see how I like it before I make a major life decision like this. I am younger, I don't have kids, & am not married..the employment in NYS is rather difficult to find a career that will not require a 50 minute + commute. So I found more job opportunities available in Boise, ID, it was ranked as #7 of the top cities to move to for 2015 and was #8 for 2014 I believe. Just for you that live there to know =) So all that stuff sounded good..I just was curious about the horse scene however thanks to your help it sounds great! NY doesn't really have many rodeos..but it definitely something I am interested in doing one day. & not knowing anyone out there kind of scares me but I am learning that after a little bit of time being someplace new you are able to make new friends =) So thank you for your help!!
