classicpotatochip - 2015-03-03 9:10 AM I have noticed a direct correlation between an excellent diet, a wonderful shoer, hock injections as needed, quality tack, SmartPakGI Ultra, Forco, Stressline Therapy and Massage, OxyMax, a careful exercise routine, and Sore No More poulticing after runs and: All of the above, now COMBINED with Game Ready, Adequan, Legend, and Previcox. 2D very consistently at big shows, winning 1D at smaller, winning rodeos, etc, etc, to suddenly hitting the 1D along with some big names at a bigger set. That's a half second, my friends. Talk about an attention getter for me! Didn't do a thing differently except for the shots and Previcox, didn't ride differently, nothing. Just knocked off a full .5 seconds. Umm, ya.

Don't these all kinda do the same thing?

No, they are all quite different. Adequan is a long term cartilage repair/preservation shot, Legwnt is a short term /fast acting/ anti inflammatory HA product. Previcox is simply an NSAID thats safer than bute. I used to use all 3 but found Pentosan is the answer for all of them.

All of our horses have different needs right now and some are injured. We maintain them differently. That being said . . .

All of ours are wormed regularly. They have their feet looked at regularly (every six weeks) by a good farrier. Once a year, teeth and vaccinations and an all over physical by a vet.

We feed our riding horses a 14/7 pellet with probiotics and Forco. They all get high quality grass hay morning and evening. If they need fiber we add beet pulp. If they need fat we add rice bran or cocosoya oil.

The gelding who is recovering from the hock infection is also on ranitidine to help prevent ulcers. He gets bute as needed. He looks and feels much better.

My three year old filly, my futurity hopeful, is also on Adequan, loading dose twice a year (about to start another one). She gets ranitidine for a day or two if I am taking her somewhere or for new stressors (like introducing another horse). I also just finished a course of treatment with Rejuvinaide for some growth plate issues in her hocks and stifles. She'll get injections as/if she needs them. I'm having all her joints xrayed sometime this month as preventative. I want to see anything going on before it becomes serious. Did that this last fall too. I have a Prochoice magnetic blanket for her and want to get the hock wraps. I also cool her hocks with cold water and sometimes ice after a good ride, then I rub her down. I'd like to investigate some BOT stuff with her too. I regularly let her run and play for 6-10 hours a day in our pasture (she's stalled with a large run too), weather permitting. This, in addition to the riding, is to help promote good bone density. I'm also doing my homework on things like Pentosan and Legend. She'll get those as she needs them.

Broodmares are on Omelene and good pasture. They look terrific. We trim their feet a bit less often but they keep them worn down pretty well. Some parts of the pasture have some decent rocks. Vaccinations and teeth are done when we bring them in to breed.

Retirees are also out to pasture. They get a scoop of Horsemen's edge when they feel like it. They all are fat and happy too. They get bute if they are having a 'slow' day or its a bit cold.

Any of them get chiro or acupuncture if we see a need. I'm also looking into some of the cold laser therapies (if I can ever get the few thousand together). You have to have a pretty powerful one. Several vets and my trainer have recommended this to me.

Tell us what your preventative maintenance is on your horses...

Here is mine...

A daily probiotic.

Soft Ride Boots when hauling.

Daily joint supplement.

Regular Adequan injections.

Allergy shots for my young horse.

Occasional magnetic blanket therapy.

Daily stretching and massage.

Chiropractic as needed.

Plenty of exercise to keep them in shape.

What allergy shot do you use?

WOW... you give SmartPak GI Ultra, Forco and OxyMax all to the same horse?

You say you knocked off a half second after adding the Adequan, Legend and Previcox?

I did! It was crazy, I just about stroked out when I heard the difference on the clock. This was in the same pen, about 30 days after we'd just run 2D after Brittany, CJ, Lisa Thornton, and some others, then turned around and ran 1D behind the same set in the same pen with the same producer.

All i did was do an Adequan course, do the Legend every Friday morning, and add Previcox.
She won't get Adequan again until the fall, but she'll continue Legend and Previcox.

Edited to add about the digestive stuff...
I do give all these things, along with 1 lb of Renew Gold. I've had really good luck bringing a youngster with bleeding ulcers back from the dead with this combination, and he also gets this regimen daily.
I like the OxyMax for all the stuff it's got in it besides digestive goodies. I've never seen it do diddly for them as far as ulcers go, but the GI Ultra covers that. Speaking with the maker of Renew Gold and reviewing the literature on OxyMax, I think each product works in a similar fashion for the digestive system for nutrient absorption. As for Forco, even the dogs around here get Forco. :)

Okay, you have my attention. I haven't read the entire thread, do you talk about the dosages and candidates for pentosan use? I'm headed to go start reading about it, is there a particular site I should check out for more info?

Biolabs is who mixes them. They are based on the results from the bloodwork. My guy has seven things we treat him for... coastal grass/hay is one of them, go figure!

Pentosan is best suited for horses that ALREADY have arthritis issues. Adequan is best for horses that are sound and you want to maintain the cartilage in the joint. Having said that, my 4 year old futurity horse gets Adequan 2x a year loading dose and pentosan monthly inbetween. Hope that helps! My good horse gets pentosan every 2 weeks and Legend day before a run.

Joint supplement
 Forco
PHT Magnetic hock boots (my mare doesnt get in the trailer without them)
PHT blanket when needed
Chiro when needed
Massage when needed
Teeth checked every 3 months
Will be purchasing some soft rides in the near future as well.
I also use essential oils on our horses and that has helped alot with nerves when hauling and rather then using flair stripes, I am able to use an oil to aid for breathing as well.

Between our joint supplement and hock boots we have not had to have hock injections done coming on 2 years now

I probably do a lot less than most people but by horses are fat, healthy & in good shape.

Most important for me is taking care of their feet, I do all my own trimming work as I don't have anyone else that I trust other than my vet who shoes for me as needed.

I feed high quality grass/alfalfa mix hay and provide loose salt and minerals.

I use PHT magnetic products, and massage or chiro as needed.

Could those that are feeding loose mineral and salt please tell me what brands you are using? I am looking at switching from the brand I use now.
