| I have a gelding that struggles every year with bumps and itchy skin. I kind of remember seeing something about parasites under the skin and treating with several doses of Ivermectin, but I can't seem to find the info now. I'm trying to research now before the weather warms up and the flys start multiplying. If anyone has experience or info, it will be greatly appreciated! |

Location: Southeastern Idaho | I don't know about parasites under the skin, but I have a mare that gets hives and bumps so bad I can't ride her. The hives will break open and ooze. Terrible... I just get her on Smart Pak Bug Off at the first of the fly season and haven't had an issue since. This was worked very well for the past 3 years. |

Location: Gainesville, TX | They are called threadworms and get under the skin at the withers, in the girth area, and middle of the underbelly. Treat twice with ivermectin, 7 days apart. You should start to see results in a couple to three weeks. I had a horse with these in November. |

I thought it was usually in the spring that thread worms were an issues? Can it be any time?
I've got one that gets the bumps and bald patches on his belly and neck and shoulders every year spring and summer. Fall and winter it goes away.I've suspected thread worms. One year I doses with ivomec and seen a slight difference but not much, but then it was later in the year too after it has already started. I'm wondering about trying a daily worker and see if that makes a difference.
I have tried fly sprays to keep the flies off - that caused even more irritation and hair loss. (Burned) Vinegar seemed to help a little. Tried all kinds of salves, etc. He's just miserable.

| Mine is definitely not tread worms. It flares up spring and summer and into fall. My vet initially said he had a fly allergy and we do our best to treat it and keep him comfortable. He gets hives on his neck and chest area and itches badly. Thanks for all the input! I'm going to look into the Smart Pak bug off... Sounds hopeful! |

Location: Gainesville, TX | Mine had them and I thought girth itch at first. Treatment wasn't working. Saw the thread on the flies laying their eggs and that ivermectin would cure it. Worked a treat.
I assume, Lucky, that you have tried dex?? Someone also had posted about make sure you use the fly spray correctly by brushing their hair against the way it lays after spraying.
Have you tried diphenhydramine? |

| my broodmare gets a bad allergy from fly bites and the vet gave her a shot of Dex. That helped a lot.
