Has anybody ever had their horse suddenly start short stepping (real bad on front right) after cinching.  We aren't cinching real tight either.  He just walks off short for about 5-6 steps then he walks out of it.  Any experience with this?  He hasn't been working (doesn't use hind end) since this all started.

A back issue maybe? I have a mare that walks funny for a minute after being cinched up tight but she's done that her whole life because she's just cinchy

I wonder is maybe your saddle is pinching your horse somewhere in the shoulder area.
Edie to add: Check how your saddle is fitting.

I have one off the track that does that, for mine it's just mild cinchiness

We had one do that and the chiropractor said he had a few ribs out on one side.  He put him back in and the horse
stopped doing it!

They are what you call cinchy. Don't cinch them up tied bc sometimes they will fall down. Cinch them up a little at a time. It's isn't a saddle fit problem or back soreness just cinchy

It *could* be this, but definitely check out saddle fit, ulcers, or something being out before writing it off as cinchy-ness.

How old is the horse?  Mine has been doing this lately....but he does have a slight knee issue and possible arthritis.  He walks out of it but it's definitely something I'm keeping my eye on.

I had one that was like this too. Chiro said the same thing, she would do the odd short step while riding too and then put her nose to the side.

Yes. Mine actually would cross over the left with his right a few steps and short step. He would walk out of it. Asked 765 vets and none really had an answer. Chiropractor worked on him and it never got any better. We would just barely cinch him walk a while then cinch up tighter. We also made sure to cinch him at least 10 minutes before a run and walk a lot. Another thing he did was trot a few steps before taking his right lead but the left he would lope off on cue. It didn't bother his barrel running ability. He was and still is a winner!
