| The paint horse in my avatar has a very subtle case of EPM but difficult to deal with. He has had two rounds of Baycox and three rounds of Rebalance. He will probably have to have some kind of treatment for the rest of his life.
I had a yearling that had some muscle atrophy in her right hip. Gave her a round of Baycox and she is a different horse. Personally I think Baycox and Rebalance are the best treatments. |

I had a horse get EPM in 1992. No one knew what it was and I had a very good vet that finally figured it out. There was no medicine for it at the time. A friend told me about a pro girl who had moved to E Tx from Montana. She told me to give the horse Daraprim which is for toxoplasmosis in humans. It did a good job. That was my only hope. The generic is pyrimethamine.
Rebalance is pyrimethamine. Rebalance costs me about $170 and Baycox costs about $300. I really do not have a preference and use what the vet suggests.
My yearling had symptoms of EPM and I did around of Baycox on her and she looks fantastic. Big improvement.
Yes, I ride mine while being treated and it usually takes just a few days to see improvement. The paint horse does have a very a very subtle case and it had to see changes but I know this horse well and apparently I am the only one who knows when he has a problem.

Location: South Central Florida | We have used Rebalance. I never heard of it before my use a couple years ago. We saw results in as little as a week. Seriously it was almost immediate. We did rest her 3 months after initially starting, and we retreat once a year or if we have a reason. She is struggeling with a Stromal Abcess right now, so we may retreat after this is over....anything that can compromise the immune system can activate symptoms again as I understand it.
Depending on finances I would try another in a year or two just to keep it at bay and change things up but ReBalance is so affordable. I have been told by many people including vets the best results come from a combination of 2 different treatments, then follow up annualy or so.
Yes she competes at a very high level. She qualified for the short go at NBHA Open Worlds in the 1D, placed in the 2D. Won her district Open 1D locally and filled her WPRA permit in 2 rodeo's.
This eye thing is actually more devistating and a bigger threat to her careear than the EPM was. |

We have had the best results with Orogin from Pathogenes. We've seen relapses with everything else that you'll see people mention. |

| When I gave Pyrimethamine to my horse in 1992, he never had to be treated again. My two year old was treated a year ago with Baycox and she has not had to be treated again.
How many horses are you basing this on? |

Location: Oklahoma & Texas | You can use Orogin/Oroquin-10 with any other medication - and if you have conf'd EPM i would definitely-definitely encourage it... if you've already bought the baycox keep using it with the Orogin.. but the Orogin works.. I had a really bad case of EPM in a mare.. tried Marquis,, tried rebalance.. kept it at bay for about 6 months with constant treatment of both including about 30 days spent in house at my vet... but still very neuro-symtomatic.. went to pathogenes and got the Oroquin-10 at that time it was called.. worked.. also one of my BFF's used Oroquin-10 as well and had success and her colt had EPM and West nile... its cheap compared to alternatives at about 150-200 for a treatment.. I HATE EPM!!! |

Rebalance wasn't patented until 2004. The drug you gave more than likely had a totally different formulation.
I am basing this on 6 horses that were treated with Rebalance and ultimately were treated with Orogin. One that was treated with Rebalance had to be treated 30 days later with Orogin and had titer numbers of: 32-32-64 |

| Maybe you live where it is not a problem---lucky you.
My horse that had it years ago was dragging his back right toe and squaring it off, tripping on that leg, weight loss----just could not get the weight back on him. Got down and I had to whip him to get him to struggle go his feet. He had a moderate case.
The paint horse in my avatar was limping on his back right. Lost weight. His was mainly on his top line. Body sore. He stepped up on a bridge in a trail class and his foot rolled over so i guess you could say stumbling. He has a VERY mild case.
I have a 2 year old that had EPM a year ago. When she would back on of the trailer she would just go splat on the ground. Horses with EPM don't know know where their feet are. This one also started loosing weight along her top line and across the top of her right hip. This horse had a mild case and it was treated very early.
I have a friend whose horse had a severe case and he was dead in less than a week. I was not that it was not caught in time. He just got sick that fast. He got where he could not stand at all. Again his case was severe.
This usually affects the hind end more than the front and the right side more than the left. It is very important to note that all horses are different and will have very different symptoms. Sorry this is so long but hope it helps.

There was NO medicine for EPM in 1992. We had to give Daraprim which is for humans. There was no generic at the time so I am sure it was still under a patent. YOU look up the generic form of Daraprim. It may have been patented for vet use at a later date but it was patented for human use before 1992. You haven't had a prescription at the drugstore for medicine for your horse? We do all of the time when it is all we have. |

She developed Orogin. The drug you're referring to is the one I mentioned. |

This is the treatment protocol our vet uses. Treated 3 last summer/fall including mine and had beautiful results on all 3. Mine bounced back and looks better than he ever has - he had very slight but noticeable symptoms like loss of top line and some tripping, slipping.
Vet's said he's treated much much worse cases and had complete recovery.
