I didn't start competiting at barrels till I was in my late 20's and sure as shoot I have no plans to stop moving towards my goals cause of my age (will be 34 this year) I do my best to keep myself in shape and have the opportunity to focus a lot on my horses..... ALSO I'm stubborn so nobody can tell me no LOL |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | Griz - 2015-03-20 5:23 AM Southtxponygirl - 2015-03-19 10:05 PM When I was looking for a new farrier after I moved up here to Seguin from the Valley, I was using this older guy that took forever to shoe just one horse, he keep telling me I was a little long in the tooth to be barrel racing, EXCUSE ME I wanted to punch him but I didnt and I was only 44 at the time, used him one more time till I found the farrier I now have that I have been using the last 10 years. You should have told him, "I get OLDER everytime you come to shoe with the length of time it takes!" 
After taking over an hour to reset one of my horses, I was ready for him to leave but had a few more to go, so happy I found one of my old buddies that shoed.

Some of my family (namely my now 93 yr old grandmother) have told me that I need to give up the horses and start having kids because m not getting any younger! I told her well right now my horses are my kids, I have to feed them and clean up after them, deal with their tantrums, and I still receive unconditional love. Hubby knows how much horses mean to me, he asked me the other day to take a year off and breed my mare and have a kid ourselves. He knows how much I want a baby out of her. Now we just have to figure out who we are going to breed to next year. :-)
Oh dear Lord I need glasses---first time I read it I thought it said "figure out who we're gonna breed first" meaning you or your mare!!! |

I really don't get it. What is the "more adult" hobby of choice nowadays? I get looks and snarky remarks for my interest in geeky things (horses rarely). What do people do that is so much more grown up? If I like it, am a functional member of society, and am not hurting you, why do you feel the need to put my hobby down? I've seen that type of behavior on this site too.
Sitting around telling people how to live their lives seems to be a popular hobby these days...and apparently its age appropriate across the board, so you'll never have to hang it up   
On a serious note, we're not all meant to live the same life. Thank them for their concern and just do your thing.

| Years ago when I was just getting back into barrel racing my mom gave me fits about it. Telling me it was for little girls, blahblahblah. I traveled to Topeka for a Barrel Bash show so she could see me and my horses. I took with me the article on June Holeman. I think that opened her mind a little. The Steinhoffs were at that show and she stopped by their booth. She got to talking to Garry. He brought her a chair and sat her down for a little gab. I don't know what was said, but he flipped her opinion 180 degrees. Since that time she has supported me and my breeding and racing program. She still thinks it costs too much (and of course she's right! LOL!), but something Garry told her resonated with her and she accepts that I'm going to do this until I can't. |

Location: In my own little world | sounds like my conversation with my husband last night. He has all but quit roping as he just doesn't seem to have the drive anymore. I don't have a problem with that but my problem came with the conversation about my young horse and if he starts running like I predict he is going to my plan is to buy my card again and hit some rodeos. No aspirations of traveling all over the place but hitting my circuit rodeos. His statement was " your a little old for that". Rather than get mad it made me even more determined, along with me pointing out several of the NFR barrel racers, top futurity trainers , etc who are in their 50's and older. Yes I have the aches and pains that come along with being older but you are as young as you feel and his desire to stay at home does not bother or deter me one bit. I took several years off while my kids were young and made hauling them a priority. Now it is my turn! |

| Ummmm... I'm 18 and get those comments! I've grown up enough to learn that 90% of people will never understand what barrel racing is, how it works, or why I like it. I just smile, nod, and walk away.  |

Location: Oklahoma | I was asked that same question when I was in my late 20's, but the reason behind it was because I was outrunning her kid. Lol I told her "Never" and laughed and walked away. Her daughter quit when she was about 18 and now has a young daughter that they've pushed so hard on barrels that she will probably quit by the time she's 12. I, however, am STILL running barrels. When I got the horse in my avatar, I was in my early 40's and had already resigned myself to the fact that I was never going to get to rodeo, but God's timing is not ours. At 45, I won Rookie of the Year in the IPRA, ended up 9th in the year end standings and qualified for the IFR. I never really wanted to go to the NFR because I knew I would have to be on the road too much, and I loved my family and home as much as I loved rodeo, but with the IPRA, I could do both, so that's the way I chose to go. I qualified for the IFR again the next year and the 3rd year, he got hurt and I missed the finals by $200. In 2011, at the age of 58, I won the World Champion Barrel Racer of the Professional Armed Forces Rodeo Association and my goal this year is to do it again with a different horse. ;) I'll be 63 in April. Haters gonna hate. Be calm and rock on with your awesome self. lol |
