So about 6 weeks ago I had an incident leaving me with a fractured pelvis and sacrum. I decided to turn my horse out to pasture and he is in horrible shape already. I am finally sound enough to start doing some ground work with him. What are some exercises that can be done on the ground to get him back in shape and ready for when I am ready to work him under saddle? So far I have been lunging him, checking him up between the legs ten minutes each side, roll backs and just started working him on trot ground poles. Any thing else? Any input would be appreciated :

The parelli "seven games" are not strenuous for conditioning but fun and get you and horse thinking together. You might be able to find them free on YouTube. Also the "First 51 Exercises" by heather smith has an excellent section on ground work. I'd rather ride! Of course - but I have found this stuff really helps me and my horses. I have logs, cones, plastic barrels , a little bridge, and etc. my pen looks like a junk yard, but they seem to enjoy it. You can variy the patterns and speed to help with the conditioning. Have fun! Hope you're well soon. I have a rotten bad back so I sympathize.

I know!! Riding is -well it is it! But take care of yourself! You don't want any setbacks from starting back too soon. The groundwork gets to be fun and interesting, I promise! I recently started my yearling on the seven games. It changed his feisty self overnight. I do my 4 yr old too. And a bit of Clinton A thrown in. I also taught him to smile, kiss, hug, bow, even fetch a ball and pick up my cap. take care of yourself!
