Location: Choctaw, OK | Okay..I got this orphan baby at 3 weeks and he did get his colostrum. He is now two months. He was just beginning to get mild scours when I picked him up. Well this baby has been sick since I got him and the vet has been out three times. We treat his diarrhea with diagel and cattle pepto..it has worked but when we stop treating the diahhrea comes back a day later! He drinks a lot and has yet to get dehydrated. Two weeks ago he developed a cough and tons of snot with a fever and was treated with antibiotics and finally..no more snot. But his diahhrea is severe now and the meds are not helping this time. Hr is still up and alert..plays a little but still lethargic. He is was given ivermectin at 6 weeks old. He acted like he had tummy pains a couple days ago And is being treated with gastroguard now. As far his diet..vet thought maybe too much protein so he is now on milk powder (75% diluted), foal lac milk pellets mixed with energizer creep twice a day. Also probios. Water and grass hay all the time and stays turned out for the most part as I dont want him in a dark damp stall. What could this be????? What should I do?? Vets next step is plasma transfusion that he says may or may not help. I am quickly becoming broke and am very attached to this guy. He is a nurse mare baby.

| Electrolytes..... could take up to two weeks or longer. Give a bottle, two hours later give the electrolyte. Mid-day give another bottle of electrolytes, I would give at least three bottles of electrolytes a day for the first few days and then cut it back to two. |

| I agree Bio Sponge works wonders ! I battled foal scours and mild colic 4yrs ago with my foal and the bio sponge was a life saver ! She still had her dam though |

Location: a secret | Just have to put my story here. I had a foal that had similiar issues but consistently had diarrhea. I gave that foal more bio sponge pepto ulcergurad anitbiotics you name it. Come to find out my foal was lactose intolerant. Not sure that is your foals issue but something to consider. Lesson learned for me and a costly one at that! |

Location: Where I am happiest | fatchance - 2015-04-01 4:20 PM Bio sponge ^^^ This^^^ There is also alot of truth to needing a buddy. Has your vet drawn blood and tested the fecal? He could also have a heavy worm load. Are you giving probiotics?

Location: Oklahoma & Texas | I second the bio sponge to help stop the diarrhea ...also the plasma transfusion for his weak immune system..having not gotten enough Colostrum he is going to have a severely weakened immune system and every little bug is hitting him hard...most foals never get diarrhea or snot that early so it has to be his immune system...plasma transfusion will help soooo much..don't wait on that...if you want to call a specialist who will give you million dollar advice for free call Dr.M.c Baker at Alpha equine in Granbury ...he actually harvests plasma in house and is an expert on that type of thing...he can probably overnight you plasma or counter to counter it at the airport if need be of your vet doesn't have any..it'll make a world of difference .....I'm suprised your vet didn't do that from the get go? Good luck!! |

| Get Well paste added daily into his regimen with what you are currently doing. It is made by Oxy-Gen and distributed by me. It contains vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, omega 3 fatty acids, it also contains beta glucans for immune system support. He really needs to have his system boosted but it is important to do this naturally as much as possible at this point because antibiotics could make his diarrhea worse and add other unwanted symptoms. Is he sucking a nurse mare right now or when did he stop being with the nurse mare??
How old is he right now??
So far your vet has done everything he shouldn't have ..
and the indications looks like the foal now has bastard strangles ..
which there is no cure for on anything this young ..

| There is a foal rescue place that I've seen online on my FB very often, and ALL their babies are buddied up. They say it fundemental for their successful recovery and emotional health. I would get him a buddy if you can if he does't have one. or a giant teddy!! =) |
