Insurance on Horses
Location: Texas
When or what helps you decide to put insurance on a horse?
We have insurance on 6 horses right now, they are mine and my husbands solid horses that will more than likely never be sold. None of our other horses have insurance nor have we considered it, until now...
Here is the deal,
We have an awesome 6 year old gelding who has been raised as a ranch horse, but is also a team roping and calf roping horse. Anybody can ride this horse. This horse is also registered and has the best cow horse pedigree.
My husband and I were approached about selling this horse as a high school rodeo horse. The man offered us $12,000 BUT he wants to haul him to some jackpots and a youth rodeo for 2-3 weeks. I have never been against people I know using or trying our horses out, but I trust them and know they would pay vet bills if anything were to happen. Neither my husband or I know this man or his son, we have mutual friends and have not heard anything good/bad or indifferent.
I don't necessarily have a "bad feeling" but I also don't have good luck.... just looking for some input.

My recommendation is that you haul the horse for them. After letting someone take a horse to "try" for one day, they brought him back 3-legged lame and drove away. No way, EVER, would I let that happen again.

I would write up an agreement and, require they insure the horse for the trial period as part of the agreement.

Thank y'all for the replies. I will not be able to haul this horse to the rodeos and jackpots because my children have their own youth rodeos and ranch rodeos every weekend. I guess I will sit down and come up with a contract this weekend.

The horse will be insured for mortality, unless its over 30-50k when loss of use comes into play and then I think you only get 50% of the insured value. If your horse is returned dead lame, you are stuck.
