Location: Midwest | Definitely get some decent riding gloves in addition to what you have. I will hack one in jeans and half or full chaps, but with paddock boots- my western boots used to stick in the stirrups and the boot shaft rubbed my legs.
Have fun! I rode english for many years prior to running barrels. |

| I would call and get your quotes and ask what they require before buying anything....I still take professional lessons 2xs a week, it helps me with me with too many thing to count! Love riding hunt seat or over fence, dressage doesn't like me much :).
But the barn I take my lessons at is pretty lax, and I ride in what is comfy for me. With that said, you will WANT half chaps! |

Location: Oklahoma | Thanks so much, everyone!!! I did find a stable that is a little bit further away (I'm looking at an hour and a half for the "short" trips), but they offer one hour lessons for $45 vs. the 30 minutes I've been seeing for $40-45 (private of course... no one needs to see me taking on this adventure ). I just don't think it's going to be something feasible for me actively do, but I know that if I'm heading into those cities maybe I can swing 30 minutes to an hour when I go and have some extra fun!
I checked around on the websites of the stables I was looking at and they all required paddock boots and helmets... so, I'm proud to say that I've orded me a helmet, some breeches, and I found some (used) tall Ariat "field boots" that TwiskedK confimed I can use in place of paddocks and half chaps! They were the same price as the used half chaps and paddocks I was going to buy, so I'm pretty excited!!

Location: Slipping down the slope of old age. Boo hoo. | Looks like you are on your way! Good to read you are getting your own helmet and paddock boots -- and I think I read you are getting half-chaps. You will WANT that protection.
Riding English (hunt seat) will make you a much better western rider. Your leg and core strength will improve dramatically and you will also reach the point you can really feel your horse through your seat -- you will also have lighter hands. It's just good for you for so many reasons -- have a blast!!! |

Location: Florida.. | If Hunt seat doesnt work then try dressage it is more what you need for body control of horse and your own balance for barrels .. it will help as you progress in it anyway and will give you a good foundation |
