Location: Missouri | My daughter is almost 6 months now, my horse is (finally) legged up, and I'm itching to start going to races again! My baby nurses so she will be going with me to races unless they're at night or it's just too danged hot, in which case she'll stay home with my husband.
So...anyone have tips for bringing kids to the barrel races with you? I'll always have help, either my mom or husband will go. Just wondering what I'll need to bring for her besides a few small toys, a stroller and a TON of sunscreen. Also, we don't have a LQ. So if anyone has clever tips for getting baby to nap at a race, please share!

Thank you! Our trailer is an older steel bumper pull, no AC in the tack area. But I have one of those sun shade things for the play pen so I considered taking it anyways and putting it outside bc she likes to have a place to roll around and play.
I've also been looking for some sort of adapter to hook up to a box fan so I can 'plug' it into my truck to keep her cool.
I admire you for going right after your kids were born! Wow! My daughter was born at the end of Oct so I had a goal to start March 1st, but that didn't happen :/ |

| A swing! Along with the pak-n-play, I had a small swing that folded up. I could put her in it while I was saddling and sometimes, if we were lucky, she would fall asleep.
I had a bottle cooler and a travel bottle warmer that plugged in to the cigarette lighter of my pickup. I loved that thing.

I think what you're looking for is an inverter. It plugs into your cigarette lighter and you can plug in a regular plug. Just be careful that it doesn't run your battery down if you keep it going for a long time. You will want to start up your truck every now and then and let it run for a while to recharge your truck's battery.
This is exactly why I haven't gotten back to riding yet. You do need a good support system in place as far as babysitters go. I definitely *need* a living quarters trailer now! lol |

I agree. I told myself I'd get back to riding at 4-6 weeks. Ha. I was SO exhausted all the time, sleep won. Plus it was gross outside. Now I'm kicking myself lol! |

We don't have AC, I haul a bumper pull also. Another thing we do, is if it is going to be really hot or cold - we haul with my SUV instead of the truck and we put the last row of seats down and turn the back half of the car into a climate controlled play area. If you take a fitted crib sheet, you can put it over top of a playpen to shield from bugs too. |

| In the summer here, it's too hot to nurse with a cover, so I would make sure to park where I had a little privacy. They'll want to nurse a little more in the heat too, because they're thirsty. I liked to try to park almost like an "L" with the truck and trailer & near the woods or a fence, and we could spread out a blanket with some toys & not have to worry about horses coming by. Mine mostly napped in the stroller. A good friend gave me a jogging stroller which has bigger wheels & lays almost flat, & works nice with the horse show terrain. I would just push them around until they fell asleep, then park in a nice shady spot. It worked almost as good as being in the car for falling asleep. |

Location: Missouri | You gals gave some wonderful suggestions! Thank you! I like the idea of bringing our svu and also I didn't think to park far away so I could nurse without a cover. My daughter hates hers! lol. I have a jogging stroller...hopefully she'll learn to pass out in it. :) |

Location: home for the winter...what a dumb idea | Not sure how your bugs are by you but a crib sheet fits perfectly over the top of a pack n play and keeps all most all bugs out and gives shade.....my son hates bug spray....he also loves his pack n play he is 2.5 now and still stays in it when needed and plays with his toys.... |

Not sure how your bugs are by you but a crib sheet fits perfectly over the top of a pack n play and keeps all most all bugs out and gives shade.....my son hates bug spray....he also loves his pack n play he is 2.5 now and still stays in it when needed and plays with his toys....
Bugs are horrible around here! I have plenty extra cribs sheets laying around - thanks for the suggestion :) the shade I have for the pack n play is weird bc it provides share but doesn't keep bugs away...it was a gift. Not sure if it will be used much. Lol. |

1. Babysitter of some kind, (even just a friend who is also running, willing to watch her while I saddle, warm up, ride, etc).
2. Pack N Play & fitted crib sheet for the top (we also have one of those portable canopy things I sometimes use!)
3. Toys, snacks, cooler full of milk, juice, and water
4. Carrier (on the body kind) I only bring a stroller to bigger shows because most of ours are on dirt and grass lol
5. Sunscreen, a floppy hat, one of those little portable fans (we are in FL afterall), TONS of baby wipes and a change of clothes to keep her cleaned up and happy
ETA- I can't wait til she can walk! We're almost there and that will be a game changer! I'll be the lady that has the kid on the monkey leash. Have you seen those things? Looks like a monkey is on their back and you hold the tail? HAHA Kinda seems wrong, but it will be so much easier I'm good with it...

Also, I put a very wet washcloth in a baggy to wipe my babies down with when its hot. Its also handy before the trip home to kind of "sponge" bathe them. Extra blanket to throw on the ground for them to lay on, and a canopy to put up over it. You can get them at Academy fairly decent. Its a nice place for everyone to sit! |
