So my horse got stifle injections about a week ago... This just seems to be never ending. But it really seemed to help as she moves so much better and has actually become a bit spunky in a good way. She was a little too laid back there for a while. I guess one theory I'm entertaining is that she's been compensating for so long with other muscles that now that she feels good other muscles are getting sore because they are being used or used in a different way than they were. Does that seem possible?? Any opinions are so appreciated. It just seems like it's one thing after another.

Sore stifles create sore back. Just get her back injected to.

So if this is the case to get her back in shape and comfortable what routine would you all suggest? She is currently on Renew Gold and Platinum CJ, free choice hay, and I let her graze and be turned out about 4 hours a day. I also started using my PHT and Back On Track blankets on her. Would it be wise to use my herbal bute on her for a while to help things calm down and get comfortable?? I was planning on just ponying her on trail rides for the next week or so then working back into riding. I was also going to use the Masterson Method on her as I have been studying that for a while.

To get her back strong get he in shape. Most horses get sore bc they are not in shape.

I think that is obvious that she needs to get back in shape to be strong and healthy. I'm just saying what steps should I take to be the most proactive and efficient with her currently being sore.

I will not say I'm an expert but I have been dealing with stifle issues so I will tell what I have done. I had to have my mares split. I have been doing lots of straight line work. But because they don't travel right mine has been out in her SI and sore there. You could see the unlevelness in her butt. We had one visit to get adjusted and then I did leg lifts with her. Chiro came back out 7 weeks later. Only needed a slight adjustment this time. So I would try a chiro

make sure your saddle fits! I had one I injected because she was hock sore and shortly after she got real back sore. The tree of my saddle ended up being cracked.

if anyone had anymore information on this I would greatly appreciate it. I just find it odd that her back didn't bother her until after the injections.

Chiropractor! Quite possible her stifles were so sore she didn't notice the pain she had from compensating so much, once stifles aren't sore suddenly she feels the back pain. If you have PHT products use those. If you don't I highly suggest them

Thank you. Yes I have the whole PHT set up and Back On Track as well. I plan on alternating the two every few days.

Massage is the main component and chiro. If it is muscle soreness you would want banamine over bute. I personally wouldn't do any anti-inflam's yet, as the inflammation is a way to signal the brain that is needs to heal the area. BOT is a good option.

Teach her to go long and low, just even at a walk,  it will help stretch out the loin. I am also not afraid to chiro and massage one after their injections, especially if they were sore for a really long time, to help get things back on track. I also have BOT and LOVE LOVE LOVE my blanket.

Massages and Chiro. I consider this a monthly or biweekly maintenance. My horses don't have the luxury of a pasture or turnout for a long period of time because I have to have them at a boarding facility. So to keep them feeling good they are always getting worked on. I also got a new saddle and that seem to help to. They were sore in their shoulders and lower back. Both get stifles and hocks done. Feed T.H.E. and Forco. Have you tried putting some linament on her back to help relax the muscles? I give mine linament baths after hard workouts to prevent them from getting sore.

Sorry to the OP but I have a question similar to this. My mare is getting injected in her stifles this week. The vet said if it were her horse she would also do her hocks since the mare is sedated, but left it up to me. What would you guys do? I don't want to inject if I don't have to, but I want to do what's best for her...

No worries!! Ask all the questions you have :) I personally think if the vet said do both and you really trust your vet then do it. Why not make your horse as comfortable as possible?? I felt confident with what my vet said because we did x-rays and they were reviewed by both the vet and a surgeon so we were able to pin point what was going on. If a vet was telling me to inject without locating the actual problem I would be hesitant. I personally have gotten to the point that I am happy to pay the extra money for the piece of mind that we have reached a definitive answer. We aren't guessing by poking and prodding and speculating. Also, like someone else on here suggested, ask your vet exactly what they plan to inject and the side effects/consequences they can cause.

Did you xray legs to rule out fractures?  Maybe inject whirlbones?
