Location: Canada | If a horse has talent I really don't care what breed it is. Now that being said - in my area TB's don't sell well and the resale value is next to nothing on them. The track sells them off for $500 - 1000 each year and the market is flooded with them. Unfortunately because you can buy them so cheap so many beginner riders, and people with no experience with horses buy them and then they end up with all sorts of behavioural problems which I think taints the market here. It of course has nothing to do with the people who bought them (SIGH!!!)
You can have an excellent TB well put together, fantastic temperament etc but they will sit 10 times longer then a quarter horse with half the ability simply because of the breed.
So if you are buying her to keep then it won't matter but if you are buying to resell in the future make sure you do your homework and that you can get what she's worth going forward.

Location: Heart of Texas | I have a OTTB and love him. Had him 13 years now. We compare him to a fine tuned corvette. He's lanky like a noodle but doesn't take much. Runs in a jim warner hack, and NO spurs. Runs 2d/3d in tough texas competition. You can head off him. Jump him. Whatever you wanna do he's game. He'll never be a 1d horse but honestly few are. Even QH's. So I would look at a horse as an individual not a breed. |

Location: NE Texas | jschipper - 2015-04-21 12:54 PM I bought an ottb last fall. 2010 daughter of Red (sire of Christina Richman's "Stitch") and out of a daughter of snowbound. The ONLY reason I bought her is because my 1D mare and equine love of my life is a Red daughter. I passed her by a few times when the opportunity came up because she's out of a Thoroughbred mare rather than a QH. I've had her since September and let me tell you, this filly is the most talented individual I've ever swung a leg over. She has more natural front to rear balance than any horse I've ever ridden, she has a natural comfort in small driving circles and is crazy quick in short bursts (she won all her money in sprinting ;)). she looks like a qh with her big booty too :) Not saying that every TB is suited to barrels, but some are built to do the job, perhaps better than some qh. Point is, I'll never knock a TB again. This mare will take me everywhere I want to go, regardless of her papers. pic is of her about 6 weeks ago :)
I LOVE Red and would love to own one! I see the picture Jill posts of him and just slobber!!!!!! Christina Richman's mare isn't the only good barrel horse by him, but he was a pretty awesome sprinter himself!
There is another sprinter that stands in OK named Mr. Nightlinger that I would also LOVE to have a colt by! |

I'm pre spoiled to have TWO daughters. My good mare was bred by Blaine but I bought her from Jill as a broodmare -- I'm crazy and decided to bring her back and it just happened to work out -- We have a beautiful Sirrocco 3 year old off her. In love with the line and would have a pasture full if I could. They are AMAZING horses. So sad that he's no longer covering mares :( |

Location: Texas | I run my Tb on the track and barrels. I have videos on youtube.com.com/thorneranch, and FB. Gray gelding named Brooks Open Gold, aka Steel. He has been entered maybe 15 times, he doesn't seem to have 1D potential to me. He is real ratey... He will be running a mile race at Lone Star Park in a couple weeks. |
